Free? YES free!

Got this from a search I did on the scanner:
Scanners have become a commodity in today's world. The Sharpwin Opticpro LS-600 is a perfect example of it. It is available from dumpinggoods for $4.99. Dubbed "the only legal size 3-D scanner" available, it can scan up to 8.5" x 14" offering a 600x1200dpi resolution at 36-bit color depth. Unfortunately, the parallel port may slow the scanning time to some extent in a world of USBs. The software provided is Micrografx Picture Publisher, now owned by Corel and the OCR is Textbridge. The scanner was on sale worldwide under the name OpticPro or Black Widow in UK. The manufacturer however does not provide Windows XP drivers though you may try Windows 2000 drivers. Plustek also appears to have drivers for that model

I got 13$ ( per scanner) shipping to midwest ..

These are LEGAL size scanners...something I have been searching for for some time.

I ordered 2

One question though-- since its older and the manufacturer does not provide drivers for windows xp will I have problems getting it to work in XP?

Even if it will only connect to the older computers running the older OS- I have boxes collecting dust I can use just as a scanner ' server'

It as a PAIN IN THE A$$ to get a legal document scanned

THANKS OP!!!

EPP connection and no manufacturers support for WinXP? I don't think I still have an EPP.

I like the free part though.

That was probably FedEx 2-day... which was also $44 for me. FedEx Ground is 16.42 to Vermont.

EPP = Parallel connection. Like, old printers and stuff. Fast enough for a scanner... no good for "legacy-free" machines and laptops.

They had several hundred of these things a few months ago, I got one, and the drivers work in xp but create a startup error that doesn't hurt anything as far as I can tell, just one of those annoying something didn't load right things on startup, it did work in xp though for me anyway. Not bad for the cost of shipping. Comes with Picture publisher 7 image editing software also.

I don't have it hooked up right now, but it sure looks like that would be no problem

At that price, it would almost be worth it to build an old beater box just for image scanning. Guess it would depend on the quality of the scans though.

Oooh. It's black. That would make a nice addition to my all-black rig I'm building, even if that scanner isn't much better spec-wise than my old Acer parallel-port one (it's 600 x 600dpi, I think).

I also wonder, Microcenter sells a USB-to-IEEE1284 parallel converter for $!0, that explicitly claims to support bi-directional parallel devices. I wonder if one could use that to put this scanner on a USB port? Might be worth a shot.

A few years ago I tried one of these IEEE 1284 to USB convertors to change my HP 720 printer to a USB printer. It was a Belkin version if I remember correctly. Could never get it to work and I took it back to Fry's. They seemed like a good idea but I never really saw any of them in action.

I had a Umax scanner that I bought when Win 98 was out. When Windows XP came out Umax started charging 30.00+ for their updated XP drivers. I was outraged and I wouldn't buy them. It was more than I spent for the scanner itself. I tried to get XP to work with the Umax scanner, but the only way it would work for me in Win XP was to open Photoshop and aquire the image and do a couple manipulations until I finally got my scan. Way too much trouble so I threw it in the garbage and I vowed never to buy Umax again. Most scanners have decent software that's applicable to that particular scanner so you don't have to do all the iterations I had to with Photoshop. The answer is probably the original software and drivers won't work with XP. Especially if they state that the manufacturer doesn't provide drivers for XP. They state the scanner "Works with Windows 95, 98, 98SR2, 9X & Windows Millenuim". There isn't even drivers for NT or Win2K. If those drivers existed you might stand a chance in XP. You might get the scanner to work by using other software like I did, but it won't be as intergrated and user-friendly as scanner software usually is.
