Free resources in XP?

Well, I just got a Dell Dimension 4300 that came loaded with Windows XP. After customizing the interface to the tried and true Windows 'classic' format (though I like the blue highlighting, so I kept that), there's one thing I can't seem to find: How do you find how much system resources you have free in Windows XP?
 
Ctrl+Alt+Del will bring up Windows Task Manager, in there besides seein what apps are runnin you can see what apps are eating your CPU processes and resources.....pretty cool.
 
I don't know the exact explanation, but I know the general idea.

Windows 98 was a 16-bit operating system, while Windows XP is a 32-bit OS. They handle programs and stuff differently. So, unlike Win98 where you can run low on resources, Windows XP (which is NT based) doesn't run out at all. It's only limited to the amount of memory you have. So, in other words: you never have to worry about running out of resources.

That's true about Task Manager . . . however, XP could care less about resources in the sense that previous versions of Windows have done.
 
So I may as well not keep tabs at all on free resources (so long as I don't have tons and tons and tons and tons and TONS of programs open)? Cool! So that's the RAM-friendly-ness I've heard about in Win2K and XP. The machine loaded with XP has 256mb of RAM, so it sounds like it'll run smoothly, no problem.

As for my own personal rig, I've still got Win98. Although XP looks like a great OS, I still plan on waiting for the summer to allow for patches and stuff and getting most of the XP kinks worked out.

The Ctrl+Alt+Del revamp is pretty neat to look at. 🙂
 
You don't need to worry about it anymore. Win9X had a set global pool of "resources" for the whole OS and all apps, NT gives each app it's own pool of resources. While it's possible for a single app to exaust it's allocated pool, it's very unlikely and won't affect anything else anyway.
 
Dangit! Screwed up an explanation! My bad, Psychoholic...I knew that it wasn't related, I just didn't explain it the right way. *sigh*
