Best of all ? it?s FREE and open to all families!

Children can pick up a FREE pine car kit, complete with race details, at
Wal-Mart paint counters on SATURDAY JUNE 1, 2002 BETWEEN 10AM and 5PM.

WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.

For all you fellow engineers here that have kids this is a really fun thing to do with them. My church has one of these races every year and there are so many engineering mods you can make to these cars that my kids (i.e. me) really smoke the (stock) competition. They might even be learning something.

...but isn't the ppoint to let the kids build and race them on their own. Parent intervention turns an otherwise innocent competition into a "rigged race" (no pun intended)😉

Of course. You work on it TOGETHER. I don't think any responsible parent is going to let their 8 year old go to work on a band saw.

The Wal-Mart kits are precut and drilled including the holes for the axles. NO POWER TOOLS NEEDED. All you do is assemble and paint if you like. They even include decals, a paint brushm and an assortment of non-toxic enamel paints to decorate your entry. The whole point of the program is for kids to build, assemble and race on their own creation. It is not for fo some gung-ho parent to turn an otherwise innocent event into a bloodfest competition.

Brings back memories of the Pine Wood derby from cub scouts. This looks IDENTICAL to the pinewood kit besides the fact that the block is precut.

We (or should I say our dads) got pretty into this when we were kids. Some kids just sanded and painted - but my crazy ass family used digital scales, graphite lube polish, sanded axels, reduced friction wheels and aerodynamic weights. Needless to say our 4 kids kicked some ass at those things.

Yeah these are pretty fun projects. When I was in cub scouts my dad and I built a Lamborghini Countach out of one. It could beat any of the other cars with half a track head start.

Hehheheh....that brings back memories. My dad was a machinist at an aerospace plant and he coated the nails that hold the wheels in with teflon. He then made me some inserts to insure level wheel placement, and added a 70/30 weight displacement with molten lead dripped into holes drilled into the bottom of the car. He then supplied some special friction free enamel for the paint, and several coats of turtlewax were applied to the bottom and insides of the wheels. Also, we found that if you bend the axel of one front tire up so that it doesn't quite touch the track, you'll get a definate speed advantage. That car was the fastest, most TOXIC car ever seen in the Boy Scouts 😀 I still have the trophy and ribbons in the attic. I hope to pass on my dad's Tim Allen-ness to my son one day.

i remember whipping out the belt sander and just sanding the whole top of the car away, adding graphite lube, and a bunch of weights so this car with a quarter inch profile flew down the track.
