I am looking for a rather permenant FREE photo site. I used webshots from 2003 until now, and it is no longer free. I am very very upset as a lot of pictures are forever gone on the old hard drives that have gone south. So they only exist on webshots.

With that in mind, they do allow a download, but it requires a 48 hr approval. What is a good site I can upload to, where it will remain free so I do not have to go thru this again.

Webshots should have just stayed part of american greetings and not been bought by smile. This will for sure eliminate many members, some not even aware.

Nothing's permanent. If you don't own the hardware/software, you're at the mercy of others. Here's a Wikipedia link on Photobucket, and it has links to other services.

If I were to do it, I'd use my own server/software. I've been watching MediaGoblin, and like what I've seen so far. It's still young software, but is coming together nicely.

Do you have an estimate how much disk space your pics take on webshots?

Picasa web might serve you as well. They do have a theoretical limit of 1GB, but photos up to 2048 x 2048 pixels and videos up to 15 minutes won't count towards your free storage, so you might be able to store a lot of pictures there. Of course, you could always create multiple gmail accounts and get much more space.

Do check - there was a recent thread about the pain of uploading videos to Picasaweb. I've never had any problem with plain photos.

Picasa is good. Skydrive is really good as well. Bonus in that you can easily maintain and backup local copies of your files as well.

Photobucket is the best. It also provides easy links for sharing photos such as automatic tags of
for sharing photos on forums

Flash drives are so cheap (or hard drives even) that you should at least have a couple backups of all pics. Even burn a DVD backup (or multiples). The good thing about you having to find somewhere else is that you can now change how you archive things.
