Angband, the spiritual descendent of the Rogue-like game, Moria. This is a "graphical" random dungeon, turn based game. You are represented by an '@' and the monsters in the dungeon are represented by letters (S = spiders, R = reptile, c = canine, o = orc, h = humanoid, H = giant humanoid).

You can find potions (!), scrolls (?), rings (=), weapons (variously represented by the pipe and slashes).

It is basically a Tolkien themed, single person, turn based, randoum dungeon game. And there are dozens of variations including sci-fi, Zelazney's Amber series.... etc.

Betrayal at Krondor the CLASSIC rpg from Sierra in 1993 is available for free. When Sierra released their horrible quasi sequel Betrayal in Antara (no relation to the Krondor storyline) they released Krondor for free. It was about a 12 meg zip file to download.

I know it can be found on the web still. while its an 11 year old dos game, BaK is one of the best RPG's ever made. Also, it was a very early try at being 3d (polygonal landscapes and mountains) and the graphics really, aren't that bad.

great thread

Icy Towers - this game is so basic, but I am stuck playing it! I love the theme music too :)

Elastomania! - this is only a demo, but this is by far one of the most addicting and frustrating games I've ever seen. I got my Neices & Nephew hooked on it :)

Clickomania! - I lub teh computar intarweb machen. A good puzzle game, has so many configuration options. I play for a week then change up the settings to make it like a whole new game.

these are 3 small games I really dig. Icy Towers has 3 version, each with different sound sample rates. I posted the 44k one, but you can get one with crummy sound that's only like 2 megs.

be aware that although the game may have been unsuccessfull, a large majority of those are still covered by copyrights, and redistributing or downloading them can be in violation of the law.

The old PC Fighting Game Classic: One Must Fall 2097

The Old King's Quest Classics remade by the Anonymous Game Developers. They're also working on Quest for Glory 2 supposedly:

King's Quest 1 King's Quest 1

King's Quest 2 King's Quest 2

Stair Dismount and Truck Dismount Games: These games are a hoot. Object of the game is cause the most damage to your stick figure. Includes high scores, fun physics, damage counters. Think of it as a sort of Crash Test Dummy type of game.

I don't know if many people have played this game or not, but it's not too bad Wild Metal from Rockstar Games.
It's on the same page as the free GTA 1 classic download. Just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for the KQ links, they're the only "Quest" series I haven't played at least one.

Don't forget Ultima IV - arguably the best ultima game of all.

If you have not played it and you like RPGs, you MUST play this game.

It runs in DOS, but I think it works ok in a DOS box on modern versions of windows.

I had a job once where I had to sit around for weeks waiting for something to break - passed the time with Ultima IV (and V which I owned).

Subspace is a real-time multiplayer action space game.

Trade Wars and Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD) are old multiplayer BBS door games. I know LORD is still in off and on development and is not free, it's $15. I believe Trade Wars is still being worked on as well, or at least a newer version of the game is, and it's not free either.

But really, you'd be better off joining a BBS that has the games you want to play installed so you can play with others. The majority of BBSs are free, you just telnet to them. Go here for a list of BBSs to join. mTelnet is a good free telnet client if you need one.

I must say, AA has the most authentic weapons animations I have ever seen in an FPS, ever. First the models themselves are accurate (individual components such as rail systems, Aimpoints, Trijicons, M203s, leaf sights). Authentic reloading (extract magazine, insert magazine, tap foward assist) and jam-clearing sequences (inspecting the bolt), and the M16 ironsight view, complete with controlled breathing. Not to mention the countless other weapons (M249, M24, M82, Eastern Bloc AK74, RPK, PKM)

Afterall, it is developed by the Army.

Well, Since nobody has tossed this up...allow me!

Best free game i've ever played yet. Full version with expansion pack, editor, and all the bug fixes rolled into one.

Hidden and Dangerous Deluxe

Finished it recently and had a total blast!

Ciao for now,
Joost
