Well, so much for trying to add a little security to a document that I probably didn't even need to lock in the first place... Anybody know of any (preferably free) programs to crack or remove a password from a Word 2003 document? The encryption is set to the basic 40 or 48-bit, whichever it is.

Wtf... i'm not trying to steal anybody's confidential information; I made up a budget, didn't want anyone toying with it, and put a password on it. You want proof that it's mine or something you 'tard?

I just want to see if anybody knows of any free software to serve this purpose (or software worth buying).

The demo will display the first two letters of the password, maybe that will refresh your memory.

Ooh, thanks. I missed that one. All the 'free' proggies that I found would only find the password for you if it was three characters or less... I'll be damned if I know of anybody who has ever made a password that short :disgust:

Word 2003, isn't that RC4 encryption? I think it is... RC4's not all that secure, but you will probably have to brute force it. I don't know of a tool that does this off the top of my head, but it would be a very small and simple bit of code so I'm sure there's a free one.

Yeah, that's it, RC4. I have a command line tool making a go at it (apparently there are only one of 16,xxx codes that the encryption can use), and it's supposed to just plain remove the password, instead of finding out what it actually is.
