runescape was ok but i quit that and started playing real games my advice is pay <20$ and get Starcraft i love the UMS maps and ended up playing at least a few hundred hours last semester
 
I used to play AdventureQuest and it was fun, but you can never log in for free anymore. It's pretty much always full, so the only option is to become a paying member.

My friends and I actually own this game. I'm not on often, but if I am on the same time as anyone from here is on I'll throw some experience or gold your way... Just have to let me know.
 
Neverwinter nights persistant world servers are pretty good and have no monthly fee (they are player-run mods).

The game is cheap nowadays (like $25 at walmart for the game and 5 expansions).
