Free NY Times online severely limited starting March28

I got the email today.

It will FAIL.

Yes, I do like reading the NYT, but I can get my news elsewhere....

This has been a long time coming: Printed media just isn't selling like it used to, and they have to make their money somehow.

I have an app on my iPad that allows me to read an unlimited, yes unlimited number of papers for $30/mo. All legit. I get PDF copies delivered to it each morning. The price the NYT wants is not competitive. I predict fail as well.

I think it might have worked without the free 20 articles. The NY Times does have some good, original content, but with all that is out there to read I wonder if I ever crack 20 of those articles in a given month. The rest of it can be found elsewhere. For example one could easily get by without the Times' coverage of the tsunami in Japan, it is nothing unique.

Bunch of bums. I have a free NY Times account from years back. Don't know if that will be affected or not. I link to some articles thru either an email or thru Yahoo News. I do know that I can no longer access the crossword. They took that access out about 2 years ago.

depends how they enforce it

they've had this going @ variety.com for a while. Workaround = go to site, let page load, hit STOP before it goes to the "subscribe now" message.

How do they know if you've read 20 articles? Everyone has to create an account? What's to stop people from creating many accounts?

I'll probably end up subscribing for the mobile app. I've gotten in the habit of reading a lot of their articles during breaks/lunch.

They hooked my wife up to that app as well.

I'm going to have a hard time to convince her otherwise.

Fail, people will just go to one of the other 10 million news sites.

The mistake being made by the NYT is that people who use to subscribe are canceling their subscriptions because the content is free on line.

The mistake is that people are dumping the NYT because it is total trash.

I have 5 free news sites I like at my disposal at any time: CNN, BBC, CBC, local paper and local radio station. Any one of them asks me to pay, I'll just stop reading and wait for ATOT to copy and paste text🙂.

Just downloaded the BBC app. I'll try it as a replacement.

Looks like I'll be reading my news elsewhere while I eat lunch.

I'll probably just start pulling my news from elsewhere, unless my school would provide free online access (like all those fancy scientific journals).

Sometimes, I wish I got the paper copy though - I find I read more articles in the paper form.

Yeah, I would definitely prefer paper. Too expensive though (to do it every day, anyway). :\

About 3 times a year, a particular magazine that I get article updates about in my email, says that I've exceeded the allowable number of articles to view during that month. I clear my cookies & that pretty much takes care of it.

The big newspaper around here, Dallas News, is doing similar thing. Free version will have very limit stories/features. You can only read the first paragraph of a story/article.

So what happens if I just use the RSS feed and never actually open the site?

Or what if I use Incognito Mode in Chrome so it doesn't allow cookies?

seems destined for failure
