Anyway, I've used UNS for years now.. quite literally.. Giganews is even better, but seeing as this is a hot deals forum, most people will probably opt for UNS.

Oh, and to get you started cuz this is all probably pretty confusing for some of you out there, check out the tutorial at:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Then head on over to http://www.newsleecher.com to get a binary grabber and set it up with that UNS trial information :)

Newzbin.com + nzb-o-matic.

Done.

Newhosting.com is great price. The only thing giga has on'em is retention, but if 40 days isn't enough...you just haven't been paying attention.. :)

Seems over, I made it about halfway through selections in my second newsgroup.

Makes me tempted to actually use the service, but only when I know something I want is out there, and then $3/3 days sounds good.

$39.95/3months service is hard to beat. Retention 30+ days is more than enough time IMO.
Giganews is great, but too $$$ in comparison, but their service is deff one of the best.

I missed out on the free trial but it's pretty cool of them to let people test their service for free. I'm probably going to give them a try.

I was paying $18/month for my old news service (forgot who it was as they changed names right before I left).

I like this service. I've done the $3 for 3 a couple of times. It seemed they lasted longer than 72 hours, mor elike 75-80hrs, but I may be mistaken. I know someone who gets the 6 month or so and has been happy with it for over a year. If I ever thrown down an extra $20/mo (a gd $50/mo just to get 3mbps/384kbps cable!!) I'm prolly going to get the 3 months or so from here.

I really can't see using it more than like 3 days a month. Data stacks up FAST with a cable etc. connection, and its MUCH more time consuming to review and delete stuff. I have like 100 GB of mp3s as it is now.

What is a good newsgroup reader program that will perform the the downloads appropriately? One that allows to find all the files (lets say.. if a certain download is divided into 100's of files, with certain file names) and download them in succession, and any neccessary decoding, etc?
Sorry if this is such a newbie question.. but the only news access program I've slightly used is the sorry @$$ Outlook Express..

Newsbin pro is the best i've used...

I ended up just going with the unlimited Giganews account. I just wish there was a way to search the groups before downloading all the headers.

http://www.newsleecher.com/

give it a try, it's not free, but you won't find ANYTHING better!!! It does a server side search!!!

how do you guys justify your stealing? i mean really. noone subscribes to an unlimited usenet service to read threads.

so how exactly do you justify the fact that you are downloading gigs and gigs of pirated material? do you think that it's going to go unnoticed?

get a concscience. stop stealing. stop being greedy. if you want something so badly then save your pennies and buy it. nothing good will come of loading your 400gb hard drives with pirated materials.

no actually, seatbelt laws and stopping at stop signs are nuissances. but stealing something that someone else has put their heart and soul into is wrong. so your analogy is bs just like your behavior.

In response to the justification of pirated matrerials...

I've been a usenet user for years. And not all binaries I download are pirated stuff. Almost all the fansubbed anime I get is not licensed, and doujins (fan made manga) cannot be purchased in America. There is also stuff like TV recordings of old shows and new stuff that I forget to record.. And then there are the old golden age comics that I get, which have been out of print for years. I'm certain if you looked hard enough, you too would find a legal binary group that interested you ...

Please don't call us all pirates.

if you forget to record stuff that is your fault. downloading smallville because you had class and your pvr or tivo was already capturing survivor is no excuse. buy another pvr or tivo.

there is no excuse you will share with me that will make me understand. those old tv shows are copyrighted, i'm sure.

quit stealing and quit making excuses. if you like those old shows, petition whomever has rights to those old shows to release them on dvd.

PS. some day media outlets will realize there is an unbelievable demand for instant viewing of all new and old content and when that day comes, you will be able to watch whatever you want on demand and do it legally. but for now we gotta go with what they present. and if you don't like it then get a degree in marketing and work your way up in an already established company or create your own. i don't know what else to tell you. but justifying stealing copyrighted material because it is an "old show" or "japanese anime" is just lame.
