Just keep in mind that you cannot get support for these versions from sveasoft. Instead you will need to go to the place you downloaded them from. As well, the place you download it from is responsible for providing you with the source code if you wish it as well. For most people this probably doesn't matter. Me, I like the conveniance of posting a question and getting a quick response from the main programmer. Or posting a suggestion, etc.

Also be carefull about the latest testing versions such as pre7a. Recently there's been a bug that screws with DHCP. And thats kinda an important feature for most people :)

Devistater,
I agree with you that the Sveasoft support is great and that it is definitely worth the fee. Unfortunately, it is used as leverage to prevent redistribution of the firmware, which has caused me to look to the linksysinfo.org forums. Otherwise, I would have freely donated months ago. Also, I'm sure most of the mirrors would be more likely to provide the source if Sveasoft would be more forthcoming in providing it, so I don't think it's fair to hold that against them. Thanks for the tip on DHCP in pre7a, good to know!

I have just started using a Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 router. I have a very specific qos need, and want to know if it is possible and which firmware I should use. Right now I am using just the newest official linksys firmware, and it cannot do quite what I need regarding QoS. I don't (yet) need many other features then what is already here in the official firmware. But, is there a way, to limit the total download (incoming) bandwidth PER PORT. What I mean is, lets say I have a 3 Mbit down / 384 Kbit up. I know I can set my "up" to 310 (80%) Kbit and my "down" to 80-90%, which will keep all outgoing and incoming bandwidth from any computer limited to 310 Kbit, etc. But what I want to know is, can I limit the downstream per port. I.E. out of my 3 Mbit connection, I want only a MAX of 1 Mbit to goto port 2, regardless of whether the rest of the bandwidth is being used. The port 2 has more than one device on it (connected to a switch), so I can't just do an IP limit (if that is even possible). I do not know all the ins/outs of all the different open source firmwares out there. Can the sveasoft alchemy do this, or if not them, then another open source firmware? Also, Devistater, what is this "bug" you speak of, that makes me concerned if I should even think about getting alchemy. Could you explain this in more detail? Is it a easy to hit bug, or does something very specific (and rare) have to happen to see it? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

I don't know if you can or not, but I'd be AMAZED if you can. That's starting to get into the realm of managed switches and they usually cost a boat load all by themselves. I'd be VERY happy to find out I was wrong though! :D

SuperG03:

Give the latest Sveasoft firmware a try. I don't remember it being able to set a cut-off speed by device but it can set priority by port, by LAN MAC address, and by physical ethernet port used on the router. I think this much more useful because it dynamically allocates bandwidth to high priority devices when it is needed. You can assign one of 4 levels of priority to a device/port.

If this won't work for you, joining the Sveasoft forum and making a request would be the best bet. No other firmware has more advanced QoS features as far as I know.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a question for you. I came across this interactive page: http://www.thewrights.cc/QoS.html which shows the QoS page of Alchemy RC5a, and at the very bottom, I see "Ethernet Port Priority", and then there is Port 1 - Port 4, and each have a priority level, and then something called "Max Rate". and the choices are like 100M, 50M, 20M, etc. Would this not be what I am looking for? Wouldn't this allow me to limit per port? Or am I missing something, and does it do something completely different? Thanks.

yes you can with pre 7a. the options are 256,512,1m,2m,5m,10m,20m,50,m,100m per port although it does not say down or up. so you are capping in both directions.

I'd really like to know how to setup a bridge (any verison; 4,5,6,7, etc)? Everything I've read (although, it was mostly 5.x+) says that the client mode isn't like a traditional bridge - ie, only one device can connect to the AP through the bridge. Has anyone had any experience in setting up a bridge using the Sveasoft firmware?

Thanks!

Apparently the DHCP daemon has issues with freezing in the last few versions. So in one of the latest testing releases of alchemy, sveasoft added a timer that every 2 mins checks to see if its frozen and if it is it restarts it. So the average user probably wont notice all that much problems with it.

As for your and Joe's QOS questions, yes the linksys has a certain switch chip in it that can do priority per port. I think I linked to some informational links about it in my OP if you want some additional info. Its a switch chip that essentially provides many features that a managed switch can (some VLAN stuff and some QOS stuff, etc). Its just that normally its hidden from everyone, and linksys didn't bother to program support in thier official firmware, probably cause cisco would get upset with them. Sveasoft added in a way to change its settings so you can play with it.

So I am going to assume v3 routers aren't supported? Man... I need to figure out how to get this darn router to boost the signal strength!

I have WRT54G v2, and I just updated my firmware to Satori 4.0, but now my wireless network is displayed as being non-secure even though I have WPA-PSK enabled. And I can connect to the router without any password key. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
Thanks!

I'm a little disappointed with the Sveasoft firmware. My wireless connection constantly drops causing my Yahoo status to reset me to "available". I don't have any 2.4Ghz phones that would cause an issue so I'm not sure what it could be.

Because it's a free upgrade to firmware with enhanced features. If you don't like it don't click on it.

are you using a b card? i've found my signal to cut out and be complete crap when i used my brother's linksys b. i went to advanced settings in the wireless tab and turned on cts protection mode. it did help, but it still wasn't that good so i got back my g!

edit: this is when i had a mixed network turned on.

FWIW I paid for the full Alchemy release and the issue wasn't any better so if you've got bouncing wireless and looking to fix it with the paid version don't.

My Dell lappy is the onboard G but my roommate has an internal B on her Dell so I'm mixed mode. I'm tempted to test out the latest Linksys firmware and see if it helps with drops. I was just playing around with the Sveasoft stuff to boost signal and set static DHCP. I don't even grasp many of the advanced added features! ;) :p

From those that are more learned than I am on the WRT54GS, what is the best firmware for WRT54GS V2.0?
