free music from allofmp3

allofmp3 now has an alternative method: free drm downloads

1) if you haven't registered at www.allofmp3.com, go ahead and do it (no credit card required) and install their proprietery player:
http://www.allofmp3.com/info/musicformasses.shtml

2) browse around as usual, and add tracks to basket

3) look at basket, select "free mode", download tracks and play away

They are 128kbps, mp3x files that only play on the music for masses player, and require internet connection for verification. As far as ads in the player, I don't see any except for a link to purchase the song/album:

Yes they are proprietery drm- if you play only on your pc of course there's no problem, but if not, think of it as a way to preview any artist or song you want before buying actually buying the cd or digital file. Which IMO makes this a pretty hot deal

Thier music is super cheap anyway...the legality of the whole site is questionable however. Use with caution.

Free music from usenet and P2P too. If you're going to rip off the artists by downloading in a manner that denies them their cut, there's no need to deal with ads.

Musicians and songwriters get $0 from these people.

Napster and Yahoo music rental services pay for their music so the artists get at least a little money.

Technically they do pay royalties to ROMs, the Russian equivalent of the RIAA. But Russian copyright law is ancient so it's treated as a radio broadcast or something equivalent. I believe allofmp3 has tried to pay the RIAA/British Phono but they were rejected. Funny thing is, I bet if their prices were $.90 a song or close to it they wouldn't be getting any flak. I really wish some legit service with no DRM and user-selected encoding/bit-rate would come out... looks like allofmp3 has a ton of rare albums too.

Fixed. 😉

I haven't used allofmp3.com in months, too much stuff on alt.binary.sounds.mp3, I even bought "CD" the other day, yipes I bought two (must be slipping).

Nobody with the exception of maybe their mothers is worried about musicians getting paid, they all just hate somebody else making a buck.

Absolute *BEST* way to support the artists - GO TO THEIR CONCERTS. Concerts help support artists. If you like an artist, go to their concerts and buy their CDs/shirts/whatever there. Much more of the money goes directly to the artist.

It would be interesting if the majority of a music group's income came from concerts.

Give away music for free or at cost of distribution to generate interest.

If you are actually good, your concerts should pull plenty of interested fans (which may include more people than now, if more people hear your music as a result of the lower cost distribution).

The legality of the site in Russia is questionable. The legality of US citizens downloading them, to the best of my knowledge, has been established as: it's illegal.

Heh, most Asian music stars already obtain most of their income from concerts and product endorsement deals-they don't make that much off CDs since pretty much every single CD you can buy in China or Vietnam or Thailand or whatever is probably going to be pirated.

They're not really starving to death so it obviously does work out ok.

Buying CD's isn't much better. The artist is still being ripped off by the music companies. The contracts are hardly more than legalized theft, and most musicians don't make any money off of CD sales. And even when they do, sometimes the record companies still don't pay them, just check google for the lawsuits filed against them. It's the record companies that lose their cut from piracy, the artists usually end up not getting a cut.

If you want to support musicians go to their concerts, and buy their junk.

Better yet, don't buy CDs, download and share, but put some money in the guys case that plays on the street or in a restaurant, make the school board keep music programs alive.

Music shouldn't be about a few guys getting rich, it should be an opportunity for anybody that wants to play.
