i've only compared the backends of phpBB and vBulletin (not free) and phpBB's admin panel seems so llimited out of the box. i'm sure there are tons of mods you can add to make things more powerful, but then you run into things getting screwed up with every security update.

i'm not sure about administration panels of the other free boards. might want to thoroughly check out the online demos. really get into the nitty gritty of the administration side of things, not just how fancy the user end looks.

I installed invision a few years back on a 1and1 free site. Nobody used it, but I really like the interface and backend control. It would be worth the $$ if a site was busy enough.

if "they" aren't very tech savvy, you might be the one updating phpBB secuirty patches.

sure, all forums can get hacked, but since phpBB is free and widely used, it's targetted quite freqeuntly. google "phpbb hacked".
