FREE CD

I posted this originally on 12/12/2000 and finally got my CD today.(2/5/2001)

So needless to say it was a slow process but I did get it🙂

Can't wait til the new one comes out so I can wait another 2 months for it too.

It's free so I can't gripe too much.

Thanks. Signed up for a second one. Forget about it and it will arrive sooner. Or, at least, it will seem that way.

If only they would give a free copy of windoz so we don't have keep sending welfare checks to Bill.

Yeah i got one about 2 months ago, the brand is pogo didn't use it though not compatible with most of my HW. Hmmm I wonder what they give out this time SuSe? I hope so.

The first time I signed up for the cd, I didn't get anything. The second time I signed up they sent me 2 cd's about 1-2 weeks apart. Both cd's have Caldera Open Linux 2.4 on them.

I would never recommend Linux to anyone. I tried installing Redhat Linux the other day just to see what all the hype is about, and it is one pain to install.

And what angers me more, is all the Linux users who go around bashing Microsoft. Linux is FAR harder to install than Windows is or ever was.

I never did get it to finish installing, it kept hanging halfway through the install. In fact it somehow messed up all my drive order (I have 3 hard drives and 2 cd drives). I had to use Partition magic in Windows to remap my drive letter links due to Linux somehow changing them all.

I like the idea that Linux is free, but it is way overhyped in my opinion, and is just as buggy if not worse than Windows (I've never had Windows mess up my drives like Linux did).

Tcool, you're missing the point of linux. It's not being touted as the ultimate replacement for windows. The masses would never accept it because it is so much harder to use. It does have advantages though. I run a linux machine and a windows machine at home -- I've never once gotten anything like a blue screen of death on my linux box. Also, linux is a lot more configurable. If you don't like something then you can change it to the way you want it; this is not always possible in windows. It is for this reason that so many tech saavy people use linux -- because they can change anything about the os, including the kernel -- which is basically the whole os itself, if they so desire. The average user probably won't want linux, but don't dismiss the os just because of its difficulty level.

For everyone else: you can download linux distros for free -- i got redhat 7 from their website for free. All it takes is time. The only thing you lose out on by not paying for it is tech support...

LOL, this just shows how lost ( or stupid) the public really is. Linux is not meant to replace windows or act like windows. Linux is a NOS- Network Operating System. Its not meant to play your games and play multimedia. Its meant to act as a server, sharing files, printing, internet access, and security over LAN, WAN, and SANs. The same deal happened with Windows2k. nuff said.

I don't think you can put linux in the NOS category. Sure it's got great uses on the server side, but it's basis is that it's a free OS for all end-users. They've done a lot of work trying to get it more end-user friendly. There'd be very little use for things like KDE, GNOME, WINE, etc. Windows 2000 is also not intended solely as a NOS. I use it and I'd take it's stability over Windows 9x/Me any day. Include it's support for DirectX 8 and you have a bonafied gaming system that's rock solid.

Sorry to get OT but I personally HATE Linux...terrible look (I'm very *into* the GUI...I have ObjectDesktop for example...) and I use Win2K so I'm not too worried about Windows being unstable. And Linux is so boring, no games... 😛 And I couldn't get my modem to work when I messed around with it, so it's basically worthless to me. Besides if I could get my modem to work it doesn't have IE so I just couldn't use it anyway... 😛
::::END RANTING::::
Good deal for those daring Linux folks!

Today I just got my 4th linux cd from them. I think they limit you to 1 per month or something like that. It rakes a little while for it to get delivered, but hey it's FREE!!
