what is the big deal with linspire? why not use fc, mandrake or knoppix as they are all very easy to setup and most come with openoffice, media players and im clients...

OK went back and got through. Installed Bittornado and finally got all the ports configured. Averaged 250k d/l and have a valid copy. May or may not use it.

Also did the FTP thing while I was figuring out the port forwarding and that is almost done now. Avg 130k d/l.

I've got a P3 machine that I may use to experiment with.

Nothing spectacular IMO. Had trouble recognizing some of my hardware when I tried a year ago ( and I don't have any fancy hardware). Much better free distros out there. I'm one of those who don't understand why people want Linux to look like Windows. If I want Windows look and feel, I'll use Windows. The reason I use Linux is I want something diffierent and better. I use Debian. My other favorite distros: Ubuntu, Mepis (both based on Debian) and Slackware. All are free.

althought i have never used this linspire version and don't know much about *nux, when i was messing around with it the easiest for my non-*nux knowing a$$ were knoppix, fc (or the old red hat) and mandrake. i think i messed around with mepis too, but not too much. with these, the installs were on par with windows xp

I just sold a boxed sealed copy of Linspire 5.0 for 29.00 on e-bay.I got it for 15.00 shipped as an incentive for us Lycoris desktop lX users to switch. Me? I am probably going with simply mepis, or possibly Xandros.

After downloading the latest IE updates and the Office 2003 updates, I tried going to StarOffice.com and IE just could not seem to find it. How strange.

I couldn't get "Lindows" to D/L either. Seems the server is getting slammed. However, I am smart enough to do the attempt in Opera, not IE.

registration required- so far their servers have been too slow for me to even register.

i'm glad some have gotten it to work- i finally was able to get the purchase to go through. now i just need to get the torrent file.

Downloaded via Bittorrent overnight; running Linspire 5.0 from CD right now.
Thanks OP.

The main "difference" is that Linspire is going after the retail market and has a dozen big chains willing to sell systems with Linspire instead of Windows.

If you have some linux "thing" you need to do, look around and get the best distro to suit your needs.

If you want to poke MicroSoft in the eye, use and support Linspire.

Linspires most "unique" feature isn't included in this "free" download.

smart move, they probably should just keep giving it away from free.

most people that are going to use linspire will probably want CNR membership ($19.00 / year). basically this gives them access to the library of free software available from Linux and an easy way to install it, just click on the CNR link and Voila it's installed. (something like that).

Question:
Can Linspire run Microsoft® Windows software/programs/applications?

Answer
NOTE: Linspire, Inc. does not provide support for third party software (e.g. - Win4Lin, Crossover Office, WINE, WineX, etc.).

In order to run Microsoft® Windows software, in general, you can utilize one of the following applications:

Win4Lin
Win4Lin is a commercial software that allows you to install Microsoft® Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows ME (not Windows 2000 or XP) inside the Linspire environment. This provides compatibility with MS Windows programs from within Linspire for those who have a MS Windows program they feel they just can't do without. Win4Lin allows the version of Microsoft Windows you install to run within Linspire once it's installed.

WINE
Wine is a program that allows Linspire users to use some Microsoft® Windows programs without having Microsoft® Windows installed. This program is free to CNR Warehouse Members. Currently, there are only a handful of MS Windows compatible programs that WINE has been successful in running reliably. Over time, it's possible that more programs could eventually be supported using WINE, but for now there are very few MS Windows compatible programs that the average, non-technical user can reliably use for day-to-day productivity.

Info, in case you are thinking that this will run any of your Windows XP apps.
However, that being said, it is MHO that M$ is terrified of StarOffice and reports like this. :D:D:D
(And StarOffice runs perfectly on Linspire 5.0!) :D:D:D
