Fresh from the press: AnalogX released an IP packet sniffer.

As usual, this comes free from one of the best freeware sites on the Net.

Download speed at the moment (Feb. 18) is at 2Kb/sec.

Has one drawback:

>>>It's important to note that PacketMon *REQUIRES* a system that has raw socket support,
such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP (no, Windows 95, Windows 98, etc DO NOT have raw Socket support). <<<

After Installing read the: PacketMon ReadMe.

<< At a Glance, it is not a competition to Ethereal (if I am not mistaken ethereal has some limitation if used with WinXP). >>

If you are using Windows XP, read the next two paragraphs before proceeding any further!!!
If you are using Windows XP, the current version of the WinPcap packet driver will NOT work; you will have to use the 2.3 beta version. As it is a beta version, it may have more bugs than the current version; please report those bugs to winpcap@netgroup-serv.polito.it, so that they can try to fix them for the final 2.3 release.

The 2.3 beta download is available from the WinPcap download page; it appears after the 2.2 download. If you are using Windows XP, do not download and install WinPcap 2.2, as it will not work. If you want to be able to capture packets with Ethereal on Windows XP, you must download and install the 2.3 beta version; note that it's a beta version, so if you install it, the risk that you will encounter bugs is greater.

Thats not too bad of a problem. Of course, I dont really use windows and havent played with the Windows version of ethereal. I use windump if I have to on Win32. But I have played with ethereal on OpenBSD and other UNIX-like platforms. Its a great program, but having another one couldnt hurt.

If I get a Windows machine in the near future to play with Ill definitely have to keep an eye on analogX's packet sniffer.
