hmm, maybe it's blocking ip's outside of nyc I"m not sure... I just came from that site, even refreshed it a few times. dunno what's wrong...

Their FAQ did say that all phone numbers outside nyc are blocked. dunno if it's true for ip also

yes-I've tried it. It seems a bit slow but more importantly-they only had 2 axxess numbers so it was always busy. However, I think now they made improvements and I think that may have changed.

If you just paste the signup.html after the http://199.105.209.50/ address it appears to go through, such as
http://199.105.209.50/signup.html or signup page

Though with the two numbers given, 212 and 516 may be busy a good percentage of the time. It came up with a all circuits are busy message on both, but then it rang through to the modem signal after waiting a couple minutes-

Free is free but time is money too; don't know how likely it is to work when you
have to get on during peak times. Might be good for casual use, though-

I accessed the page just fine. It may be that the service is blocking all dial-up area codes outside of NY. Since I'm on DSL, the website didn't "know" what area I was accessing the site from.

<< has anyone tried this service?.... irs prolly slow >>

I'm using it right now. It's Ok, but I can't wait to get broadband. I'm using it until it goes bankrupt, which it will like every other free isp. I have one complain about Metconnect, it's that it tries to port scan my computer a little too much for my comfort. I don't like that. :disgust:

See what it says when I click on "email" link on their webpage...

"MetConnect is no longer offering free email. " Seriously if they can't offer free email anymore, how long do you think before they say, "MetConnect is no longer offering free internet. "

I heard that if u live in NYC, you can actually get free high speed internet access through those patched 802.11b satellite made from Pringle cans. Just get a 802.11b card and you r set.

Nice post....

Had trouble with accessing webpage, so I called them... The response I got "That service still exists, but there is no more tech support department for it... so if the webpage is down, I apologize, but there is nothing I can do."

Also, webpage does mention something about no more e-mail support, so it is just dialup....

My friend used to use them, but then they went down, and just dicked him over.....

But for all of you who want to try, I salute you..

The link works. I have a cousin that uses this service with a 56K modem, but he only gets 28.8...so I guess the service is pretty slow. But hey, it's free...what can you say?
