Not sure if this is a well known fact, but if you are with Verizon wireless, you can press *228 on your digital phone to activate *something*(maybe upgrade the firmware of your phone?), it is supposed to improve your digital phone reception. This will only work with newer phone bought after Dec, 2001 or so.

I just did this over the weekend. It's just like a firmware update, it even says whether it's successful or not. Now when I'm out of my home area, it doesn't even say roaming anymore. This is under the America's Choice plan. I was a good 15 miles out at sea before my signal was dropped, much better than last year imo.

Nothing but praise for it.

just did this and it was successful but my phone is older than that, also I did both option 1 and 2, any difference?

From my corporate telecom person:

"This is just a reminder that employees with Verizon Cell phones should periodically update their PRL (primary roam list) on their phones. By following these instructions at least once per quarter you will ensure that your cell phone is registered with all new roaming areas that Verizon Wireless covers. In order to update your PRL please do the following - while you are in your home calling area (not while traveling)."

Power on your Verizon Wireless phones
Dial *228 and press send
Press 2 for a free roaming list update
Remain on the call while your phone is programmed.
Within 2 minutes, a voice recording will advise you that programming is complete. Do not hang up. The call will disconnect automatically.

Thanks for the info stu70....

Does anyone have a similar explaination for what I just did to my phone by pressing option 1? 😀

I also just "updated" my roaming area...........when I looked at the screen on the 'phone when the call was completed, it said something that made me wonder if, by doing this, I have just extended my term of commitment? It also seems to me that this "update" was for Verizon EMPLOYEES!!

I originally signed up for a two year commitment, and have less than a year to go...........I hope I havent just added another year to my commitment. Anyone have any info on this?

Don't worry, it just means you're now an employee of Verizon.. just sit back and wait for the paychecks to start coming in...

I wish Sprint did something similar. I have to go to the actual store and wait in line, hand them my phone, wait another 15-20 minutes... then i'm finally done.

This isn't just for empoyees; I just got my bill yesterday and it came with a short newsletter and doing this update was one of the things in the newsletter.

Actually, this should work on any tri-mode phone. I do this periodically with my Startac.

Option 1 puts in the calling area software, such as regional, America's Choice, etc.

I'm on a month-to-month plan... so... sorry to disappoint the paranoid, but it doesn't sign you up for another two years, enlist you in the Army or assign your first born to Verizon.

Also, if you have an area code change in the future, this is how they'll update your phone; previously, the chip had to be reprogrammed in a Verizon store.

Anyone know of something similar for other carriers? AT&T specifically?

With Sprint you will get an update (if available) when dialing customer service (*2). If an update is available, it will prompt you (at the start of the call).

This sounds (could be wrong) like its updating your PRL (preferred roaming list) over the air. If thats what you are doing (sounds like it), then you should actually do this once in awhile, since the PRL is updated from time to time.

Eh...this is a good and bad thing.

It's called OTA (over the air) updating. They use it for pretty much everything now-a-days, for actually programming the phone (getting the number into it, and the home NAM and SID--system ID stuff). This is what would update if your phone number or area code were to change.

They also use it to update PRL (Preferred Roaming Lists), basically, it tells the phone what towers to look for, and in what order. So yes, your digital service may improve if you do this update.

It IS NOT a firmware upgrade! Those have to be taken into the store to get done. Some phones have had several firmware upgrades. With sprint, it's best to call to make sure they have the equipment for your phone, go into a store, hand it to them and tell them you want to make sure you have the latest PRL and firmware. They should be able to tell you, or have it done within 5 minutes or so.

Verizon Customers...

It's almost ALWAYS best to go into the store and have them do the *228 upgrade. In Ohio (former Airtouch region), the *228 programming was inputting the NAM and SID's backwards, at least through September of 2001. However, it would strangely work fine in the home area, but when travelling, things would become difficult.

Clueless reps or alternative sales people (radio shack, etc.) just used and assumed the *228 automatically inputted the correct information, which would actually degrade your service if you were travelling.

I've done this before and it improved my reception and as i just did it again on my wife's phone she went from 2 bars to 3 bars of reception. Thanks for the post. 🙂

My Samsung phone with Verizon gives me this message "The feature code you entered is not valid"

Phone was bought last month. Or it comes up with a text message saying "this phone has been restricted"

i have the sanyo 6200 sprint phone, do you happen to know if bringing my phone in for updating will actually help in any way (ie, give me some signal in my home?) any info would be appreciated....
