From FW (hope this is allowed, I haven't posted here in awhile)...

In an article I read in the March 3 - 9, 2003, Los Angeles Business Journal, page 4.

........with gasoline prices over $2 a gallon in many places, Wilmington, Del-based bank ING Direct has struck a deal with local Shell stations to spring for motorists' fuel March 6.
Good news for drivers, the company says, since there are no catches, other than to be hit with some ING marketing gimmicks.
"We're just happy to save Angelenos some money," said Ashlee Stokes, an ING spokeswoman. "Nobody needs to sign up unless they're interested."

Ashlee Stokes ashlee.stokes@ingdirect.com (302) 255-3034

"The spokesperson with ING Direct called me this morning to tell me the locations of the free gas. She said there were 3 locations, however, I only got the first 2 from her.

(1) BURBANK
550 N. HOLLYWOOD WAY
BURBANK, CA
6:30 AM - 9:30 AM

(2) SANTA MONICA
1802 CLOVERFIELD BLVD.
SANTA MONICA, CA
6:30 AM - 9:30 AM

(3) ???????????????
6:30 AM - 9:30 AM"

This is pretty cool. I work right by the Santa Monica one.

Peace,
Dezign

I am surprised that anyone who can afford a car (and the insurance on a car) has enough time on their hands, and values that time so little, that they would be willing to sit in the surely hourS long lines to get a free tank full of gas.

I am surprised that LA is even allowing them to have this promotion. Without a LOT of police supervision to keep traffic from getting entirely gridlocked, this is a disaster in the making.

WTF? It's not like giving away free gas for 3 hours is going to increase the amount of cars in LA, dillweed.

This will be another amazing example of what people will endure to save $25-$35 dollars. If you have to wait in line for two hours to get gas, is it really worth the money saved? I guess it depends on how much you value your time.

They've done this in NYC a few times. Usually its some Radio Station gimick. You should see the lines of people waiting...

And the thing is, this is not the kind of social event waiting that people sometimes endure, for, say, concert tickets. There you get to sit/stand in line and kibbitz with other people who probably have similar interests.

No, kids, what we have here is pure GREED enduced waiting. Nothing is duller than sitting in your car for hours on an endless line, spewing tons of pollution out your tailpipe. How many times will these people turn their cars off and on? How many of them will run out of gas waiting? For what? $20 of gas?

Sheesh...

heh...the Shell by my house is already crowded, even w/o free promos. if you go there in the evening, you'll definately have to wait to buy gas. sometimes, the line goes almost to the street. in the morning, it's crowded too, but at 6:30 AM, there's usually 1 or 2 free spots. about two months ago, it wasn't even close to this crowded. anyways, i couldn't imagine how long the line would be. guess if you drive an Excursion, and you have to fill up the tank, then it might be worth it.

Clearly, you are mistaken on this. There will be increased pollution due to this promotion.

Consider it this way: Every minute somebody waits in line for free gas, that's another minute that the car is on instead of going across the street and coughing up the money.

Just like how there would be less polution if there were no traffic even with the same number of miles traveled, the same would apply here.

it depends on the effort involved...would you wait in line for 10 hours just to get a shiny free penny?

Your reasoning is fundamentally flawed. Consider this: The traffic generated by this promotion deter some people from going out and therefore not use their cars. The list goes on and on and on and on.. there are TOO many if's and maybe's to consider. So, you CANNOT definitely say that this promotion will cause an increase or decrease of pollution.

heh the problem with the promotion keeping people from going out is that most people have jobs

Most people in LA don't have 8-5's, though... there are a lotta "actors" and "musicians" in this town. ;)

hmmm...let's not grossly over-analyze this....!! It's just free gas and to some people $30 is a large amount of money. Consider someone on hourly wages making even $10/hr. A 2-hour wait is justifiable for that person. Now if you are going to calculate all the macro-economic costs you could, but do we really need to do that? There is money lost due to lost productivity, cost of pollution to all of earth's inhabitants (i.e. through rising sea levels as a result of global warming, and yes there is evidence), costs in terms of maybe if you spent that time with your kid he wouldn't become a murderer, or worse a white-collar criminal!. Yes, so let's NOT overanalyze this...
