DOH !!! 🙁

I can't find the link, but you were previously able to order this for free directly from MS on their website. Might be worth taking a few minutes to poke around there instead of buying hardware (if you don't need it) just for a 30-day trial....

TheDuk,

Is this what you were talking about: Link ?

It's $9.95.

BTW, here's an interesting thought: Note one of the comments at the bottom of the above page:

"The preview expires 30 days after activation, reverting to a reduced-functionality mode. This means files
created with the preview software can still be viewed and printed but not altered. To regain full
functionality, you will need to either purchase a license for Office XP or reinstall your original version of
Office. You must uninstall the trial before reinstalling a new or previous version of Office. "

I wonder if this means that you can then use this software as a viewer for any of the Office XP applications (e.g., Word, Powerpoint, etc.), in general?

I'm sure if you poked around the net long enough you could find a little program that would fool this demo into thinking that it was the full version.

This has been free from Microsoft forever. (I think you have to pay shipping though). They were giving these disks out at MS Tech meetings like crazy. THere's a reg hack out there that removes the time limit, but you won't be able to install any service packs if you do it (yuck!).

This is nice, considerring it probably comes with all the extras(templates, clipart, etc) that the full ver has. Of course it can be hacked open with your friendly crackers and warezers, and you CAN get the full ver online if you look hard enough. But some of us have dialup, and therefore are unable to do that.

To all the anti-warez ppl: Microsoft and others have effectively declared war on the consumer market, not just with their monopoly business practices, but with placing a price on their products of more than the computer cost, for what are considered standard, required products. Corporations might be able to pay for the site license for these, but how many people running $400 emachines with dialup and very little money are ABLE to pay $500 for normal, standard software? Microsoft knew this, and when they continued to overprice something that takes so little to make (what changes have u seen between Word 97 and Word XP?) they decided that the consumer market was just a bit too poor for them. Let the corporations, who have MS auditors knocking at their doors, buy the overpriced Office in bulk, while 50+% of the home users just use warez. This condition used to encourage people to actually buy the product, and install it on their 3 or 4 computers in their home. With Product activation, however, what does it pay to actually buy the product if you can't install on mult. comps? MS lost almost all of the already rare goodwill towards them and willingness to put up with them when they put in product activation.
