Ever wanted to try flying an R/C plane or heli, but did'nt want the risk of sending a 100$-1,000$ investment spiralling into the ground?

Try FMS, the "Flying Model Simulator". It's freeware, and pretty good freeware at that. However, unless you've got a transmitter & adapter cable or a joypad with dual analog sticks, you're going to have a hard time flying anything.

It's a good "trainer" for actual R/C flying; although not as realistic or advanced as RealFlight, it's also a lot cheaper. If you can fly a plane in FMS, you can easily start flying a "trainer" R/C plane, and it even makes heli flying a lot easier.

There's a lot of free planes out there for FMS; I'd reccomend looking for one called the "Frog". It's an excellent trainer, and a kit for it is availible for 35$.

Also, a further note:
R/C helis are really, really hard to fly. No, really. If you want something easier, go for a coaxial helicopter; although they're less aerobatic, a coaxial will just hang in space like a demented mechanical baloon.

I skipped the SIM and learned on my Blade CP ... I think I ended up wasting $200 on main blades in the first month ..

Quality-wise, looks about the same as the Real Flight version my dad had 10 years ago. So if i gave this to him, he'd probably think it's pretty good. Nice find Cheesehead.

I have had this program for years now and you can use pretty much any controller you want or get real fancy and get an adapter to hook up a real futaba rc controller ;)

Lots of fun, not as good as realflight but your not payuing close to $100+ for the damn program :D

thanks - this is timly, thinking of getting my 12 year old a RC something to learn on (of course I'll have to help :)

Since I know zero about RC - could anyone recommend a site to help get me started (eg - what to buy, how to get started etc).

Free training software sounds like a great idea, would I need to get a controller that works w/ the computer / sim software? and would that work with what ever plane I get?

Lastly, any suggestions for a good solid trainer that is reasonably priced (and I don't have to build from scratch - general assemble is ok).

thanks in advance
