Free file/folder recovery program

My buddy deleted a important file off of his thumb drive and he used a trial version of a different sotfware program and it let him view the file to recover but not actually recover it. He only needs it for this one time use. What are your thoughts?

My guess, is you'd have to pay for that program. Or pretty much any other program out there that does the same thing. Companies know how valuable this kind of software is, so they're not gonna give it away for free.

Unless there is a freeware out there?
