anyone know a place that lets you choose the # (like more than 4 digits) for under $10 a month? Something like a low yearly rate would be good.

If you want a local number to receive faxes, J2 (mentioned previously) does allow you to pick a local number with their Premier service. I don't know how detailed they let your choose, but I think they give you a bank of numbers, and let you choose from those. They charge $12.50/month or $124.95/year, with a $15 activation fee. I have not used them, but my wife did for a while, then cancelled, because she didn't need the local number anymore, so she just signed up for a free one with a number out in CA or something.
