Microsoft has released 5 'Express Editions' of Visual Studio. " These free applications offer a student and hobbyist-oriented version of Visual Studio, and are available in C#, C++, VB, Web Developer, and SQL flavors. Each download weighs in at right around 50MB and features tools, documentation, and starter kits. " - /.

Does this just downlaod an installer and not the full thing? My download was only 2.5M or so.
I'd like to downloadthis from work but can't install it there. anyway to get the full package?

Yes its just the installer, except for SQL Express, that is a full download. I checked out the VB install, VB is about 60MB download and it gives the option of also installing SQL(84MB) and MSDN Express Library (130MB).

erm... what, exactly is this? Is this time-bombed at all? I see it says beta, but is this literally free to use?

What can't you do with the VC++ version? Does it include MFC support? ATL? COM? Can it compile full weight app extension DLL's?

I suppose what I'm asking is can I use this to "replace" VStudio.NET 2003?

Edit - Nevermind, the FAQ answered it for me. It does NOT include MFC or ATL.

Hot. Nice post.

For truly amateur hobbyist programmers, these are pretty much sufficient for just about anyone. Certainly no need to pay $600-ish bux for the real deal.

The pressure from free and Free open source tools and platforms must be getting to them.

Cool. I bought VC# 2002 for $100 back in the day. I guess I can install the newer version (even though it is probably castrated) and see what the newer version has in store. If I ever want to build anything for distro, of course I will use my retail version.

Looks like they may be trying to gain interest in .net since it hasn't really taken off like they had probably hoped.

Just a reminder that these are just Betas. Will the final versions of the "Express Editions" also be free? How does this compare to the may edition of the Visual Studio 2k5 May Tech Preview?

Um - be forewarned, the installers are very, shall we say quiet. It's been downloading something for the last 10 minutes on my DSL without saying what, where or why to me.

I hope you all realize this is a beta download that is not fully functional (the new features, still more being implemented, etc)

It is either downloading the .Net Framework 2.0 or the MSDN library. It does that after it restarts. Pretty crappy installer, I would have closed it since it looks like it is hanging but I am glad I have a network monitoring app so I knew it was downloading something. The compilers in these are supposedly not the cheap inefficient ones MS used to give out with demo editions. I am using the C# one now. The tutorials which are supposed to get noobs hooked are not very good at all. I'd recommend a book if you want to learn it. If you know Java or C++, you probably can make enough sense out of it.

How well can these VS .NET 2005 Express products coexist with VS .NET 2002/2003? Do you have to have .NET Framework 2.0 installed? I am assuming Frameworks 1.0/1.1/2.0 can coexist?
