Buy.com is offering this deal again today (2/2/02)

Buy.com's price mistake of the day

EDIT: List Price $79.95 - You Save $39.95 plus $40.00 mail-in rebate. After the rebate, this is a FREE 56K Modem.

Did anybody get this deal the first time? Is this modem better than others?

Nice deal, but you should mention that there's a rebate involved, or people will start to get pissy ;)

If you go to Elsa's site, they have drivers available for Win2K ... most likely will work with WinXP too.

I note that the rebate form is a blank. I guess you're supoosed to print it off, write "You owe me $40" on it, post it up the chimney and wait for Christmas.

The blankness thing happened to me yesterday with the Harmon Kerdon Speaker Rebate. I had to download it with an FTP tool. It wouldn't work with IE.

I'd be real careful about buying anything from Buy.com now. Not only will they be closing down but it took me 3 MONTHS to get them to give me a credit for a supposedly new cordless 2-line phone/answering machine (had someone elses phone numbers programmed in it) that was defective. If you get a dead modem - good luck! :disgust: Must be any store with the word Buy in their name - Best Buy and Buy.com both suck! :|

Hereafter you'll find a list of all the ELSA devices which work with Windows XP generic driver :

GENERIC DRIVER :

A lot of ELSA devices are ready to work with the internal Windows XP driver and don't need a separate driver.
These devices are Plug and Play, e.g. Windows detects an ELSA MicroLink 56k Internet PnP if it's a Microlink 56k Internet.

ELSA MicroLink 56k PCI HCF (Please choose in the Manufacturer "GENERIC" and in "Models" the "Generic 56k HCF Data Fax Modem")

Yes....the built in XP drivers for Microlink modems will work with this modem.

Microlink modems are generic chipsets, so it doesn't matter who's drivers you use. Also, this modem's quality stinks, so don't expect too much from it. I work for a national ISP and we usually recommend people stay away from HCF, HSP, and especially PCTel chipsets if at all possible.
