You can use them for decoupling fans from your case to avoid vibrations, which in the end does help alleviate your ears.

So, seven machines in my room

Heh.. maybe in a few years I'll sleep in a server farm 🙂

It's winter in california.. it's relatively cold outside, but I leave the window open and put a huge fan there too (which adds to the noise btw). Umm.. as far as summer is concerned, the residence halls get free air conditioning 🙂 Well free in the sense that we don't pay the utility bills since they're included in our annual payment, which probably isn't so bad considering how much electricity I tend to consume 😀
