ive used the free trial of magic dvd ripper when i need 2 copy a dvd to my computer, but i think they got rid of the bug where you can reinstall the software and continue to get the fully-functional program without paying.

do guys know of any software that is FREE and does not contain watermarks, sounds, or limits on time.

thanks for any responses!

3 options here, all are free:

dvdshrink - reencodes dvd to fit on 1 disc

DVD Fab HD Decrypter - removes protection from DVD and copies onto hard drive, but doesn't have a shrink-to-1-dvdr option. But it is more advanced than the built in ripper of dvdshrink meaning it handles newer dvds with newer anti copy protection, so you might want to use this first and then feed the ouput files into dvdshrink

Fairuse Wizard - convert DVD to avi or similar format (you need to use DVD Fab HD Decrypter first)

dvdfab
dvdshrink isn't updated anymore. it fails on many newer dvds. it will work on dvds once decrypted with dvdfab though.
i use a mixture of dvdfab, dvdshrink and clonedvd2

I used dvd43 mixed with whatever ripping program you feel like. Now I just use handbreak to rip to mp4.

DVDShrink is great. Easy to use, powerful and free. It probably works for about 90% of dvds, but if you're having any issues, load AnyDVD, then run Shrink. It allows you to rip the iso file as well has the hard drive files. Very handy.

Ok I tried DVDshrink and DVDFab and everything worked fine...but one problem - the file was converted to .BUP? what the f**k is that?

magicdvdripper ripped the dvd straight to AVI. that's all i want. no hassle. im not looking to transfer the dvd to a blank cd, just my computer.

oh, and handbrake doesnt work for me. i dont know why.

If you want avi, you'd best do what I said in my post and use dvdfab then FairUse Wizard (you want to rip into ISO format in dvdfab (look for the button where it says target), and then load that iso into FU Wizard. That's 2 steps but it's free. I don't know of any 1 click dvd to avi freeware (I suppose you could make it one-step by using "on-the-fly" decrypters like dvd43 (free) instead of using dvdfab but that causes alot of wear on your dvd- converting to avi is a slow process and your disc will be spinning the entire time.

If you don't like Fairuse Wizard there is an alternative called xvid4psp but I've never used it

You weren't doing something right...not really sure what though. What were your steps and what file were you trying to create? Iso?

Oh, my bad. Convert to avi I see. The best way for that, again, is to first rip the dvd to your hd(not as an iso). You'll get a folder with all the dvd files. Next, use handbrake with that folder as the source file. You can create many different types of files with handbrake. I use it encode normal avi's, as well as h.264's for my touch. Don't worry, you'll get it.

Maybe it asks you if you want to install a browser toolbar or some shit during installation- just say no and it will work perfectly fine without installing any junk

well avast keeps saying it's malware and it wont let me ignore it.

any other suggestions??

If you got FairUse from the manufacture site it isn't malware...your getting a false positive from Avast. So why not just turn Avast off during the process?

Boot into safe mode and install? in case you don't know how, reboot computer and after the bios screen keep pressing f8 key until menu comes up. Not sure about Avast, but I use AVG and I think it and most other AV programs don't auto run in safe mode
