free DVD creation software

I'm looking for a basic program that will let me take a AVI file and burn it to DVD as video format. Ability to make menus and such a bonus but not needed.

Trying to use Nero but it craps out when it tries to generate the preview, probably because its trying to load the whole file into memory and its like 4Gigs.

Searching for software these days is pointless, rather get recommendations. 99% of search results are these falsely advertised programs that end up being trials or asking for money.

The best free program I have found for converting avi files to DVD files is AVI2DVD. It's slow and a little quirky (file names), but produces good results. Website.

DVDFlick is another free program you can try. It's basic and has an easy to understand interface.

If you want to spend a few bucks, the best, by far, is ConvertXtoDVD.

+1

If you have a few bucks, buy ConvertXtoDVD.

Trying out DVDflix right now. Wow it is so much better then nero. Nero takes like 5 hours+ to burn a DVD. This one looks like it may take less then an hour with the way the progress is going.

Though, does it just generate the files, or does it actually burn it? Since if it just generates the files then I'll need another program to burn it, as I'm sure there's more to it then just doing drag and drop, it has to burn it in a special way. It's like when people try to drag MP3s on a CD, it ain't making a music CD.

Edit: lol it just finished, 15 minutes! But yeah all it did is generate the files. So how do I put that on a DVD properly?

What type of file is it? ISO?

I'd use nero for that.

It's an actual video file, don't know the exact format, but I just want to burn it as a DVD. I created the DVD files like AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS with it but now I need a program that will burn it as a real DVD (not a data disc).
