If you own a Pentium III processor and register to intel's weboutfitter web site you get up to $148 towards the purchase of a dsl modem. I was able to get 3Com HomeConnect ADSL PCI modem for free. BellAtlantic Infospeed DSL for $39 a month and the first month free.

I'm a team developer in the broadband department for Bell Atlantic InfoSpeed DSL, if you have any problems/issues... and you will.. don't hesitate to hit me at the email below. cheers..

I think I'm going to end up with PacBell DSL service in Northern California. Is the service really that bad with PacBell?

If you are planning to get DSL from PacBell, I strongly recommend you to think twice. Their server had known problem that will drop you off from their router table. I had to call them every month to have them rebuild their router table. Each time it takes about a week. Each time I call them, their unhelpful level 1 & 2 technicians had to make you go through the insulting testing of your machine which requires you to uninstall ALL the protocol and reinstall it again. Not only that, if you plan to download huge files, forget it. It give you great transfer rate for about 10 minutes, after that, the transfer rate drops down to 0k/sec. They admit that it's a backbone issue, from their side, however, there is nothing they can do about it. I was like, watdaf**k! Anyways, I am prepared to contact their legal department now for breaching of contract (service paid, yet non perform). By the way, if you are experiencing the same problem, drop me an email at sworshs@hotmail.com. I am going to file a FTC complaint against them. The more people I can gather, the better. This is like another AOL case!

Mod: I just want to point out that PacBell DSL is not a hot deal. I know it's a little bit offtopic, but I gotta warn the others.

Make sure you check how far the DSL station is from your house. If it's less than a mile away, you should have pretty fast service. Anything over 2 miles away, forget it. Try cable instead.

Unfortunately DSL is the only option in my area (Davis). I live 1 block down from their CO. And line wise, it's the best they can offer. (confirmed by a friend of mine who works in PacBell) Also, do even bother to submit help request on their website. It's been over a month and there is no respond.

I have pacbell and for the most part, they offer good reliable service. I was one of the lucky ones to have signed up early on and recieved my own static ip. Sync will drop about once every 2 months... I think it's really a hit and miss thing with pacbell. Some will hate it, and some wont.

And yes, capping usenet to 128kps SUCKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!! They cite more reliable service. What a load of crap.

I'm in davis as well (off of F & covell so I'm pretty far from pacbell's offices). I have pacbell's dsl and it has been nothing but great for me and my roommates. we've had 0 problems so far with their service. weird, eh?
