Free downloadable "Maya Personal Edition"

I tried to get it earlier. I think the site is getting slammed. 😀

edit: Earlier like probably around when tb first posted it. The page wouldn't load up, so I gave up. But it seems to be working now.

ah, i remember some kid getting sued for using that illegally when he posted something he made with maya...

The Alias website does say the free download is meant for non-commercial use:

"Maya Personal Learning Edition is a special version of Maya® software, which provides free access to Maya for non-commercial use. It will give 3D graphics and animation students, industry professionals, and those interested in breaking into the world of computer graphics (CG) an opportunity to explore all aspects of the award winning Maya Complete? software in a non-commercial capacity"

I thought they always (as in the last two years or so) had a free personal or educational edition, it had everything the pro had except that every rendering had a watermark on it.

Tried to register but kept getting the message:
"Please provide a valid Operating System"
There was no place to enter operating system on the page.

Had already entered Window 2000/XP on earlier page.

I am not sure why you are having trouble - I just tried downloading again & had no problems! I just followed instructions on each of the 2 pages.

If you had successfully entered the OS in the 1st page, it shows up on the top of the 2nd page under "Confirm System Requirements" heading

wow! maya for free. my friend would send me a ton of his projects and they were amazing. apparently u can cell shade with maya too! thanks!

FYI, Sidefx also offers Houdini (apprentice) free and Discreet Logic has a version of 3Dstudio Max Gmax available for download.

These are all hot deals for the aspiring animator/modeler.

Will have it in another 16 minutes...thanks!

Now if someone could point me to a learning version of Lightwave, i could finally get my homework done...

Dave.

So, this version is not crippled? Awhile ago, I saw a free version with restrictions/file format differences?

This is a great program, but a little daunting if you're new to CGI. All renders are watermarked, and I believe you don't have access to advanced features like fur systems or fluid dynamics (only in maya unlimited). If you're having trouble getting started, 3dbuzz.com offers quality free tutorials, downloadable or mailed to you, but the site operates on a karma system (you get your tutorials faster the more you participate in the forums or donate cdrs/stamps etc). 3D world is also a great (though expensive) mag for this kind of thing
