DNS2GO offers the same service as TZO, but for FREE (TZO is $25/year). You just sign up, select your domain name from their list, download a client, and Poof! You have your own domain on whatever computer you run the client on. Great for FTP or game servers. There's also a feature where you can log in to their web page and activate your domain (so you don't need the client running).

Very handy tool.

Ya, watch out for "free" domain registration.

I've heard that a large part of their scheme is to hold domain names for ransom. If your site becomes successful, it will quickly surpass their standard free allowance. Then, they'll inform you that you need to upgrade to one of their "premium" services. And you're screwed, because they own the domain name, not you.

Cheers,

Not with domainzero.... i got my name registered and basically the WHOIS says the registerant is me, so i own the name. Admin, Billing, and tech is domainzero. But I think the registrant field is the most important.

If you are unsure about ownership priv's, try to find a site that uses it and run a whois on it.

Now with namezero, they keep the rights on it. So namezero is suck.

for a free server check out http://www.freeservers.com - they give you 20mbs, and they will host a web-based mail server for your domain name at no extra charge. Thats where all 3 of my domains are.

Yes, Freeservers.com has excellent service, but I meant a physical server to host my netgames...

I've been using DomainMonger.com, very stable and easy to manage your domains... $17 bucks for 1 year, price goes down if you buy it for more than 1 year. Im pretty sure you own the domain. I had written to their support, and they said the domain is mine, and I can sell it with no problems...

A few months back, I jumped on Catalog.comfor a domain. They were like $30(?), but you get space, pop, and 1 gig traffic. I just thought this was easier so I didn't have to screw around with where to park the domain... :)

Use Domainsite.com, it is the best. $13 for each year, fast registration, good search, YOU OWN THE DOMAIN NAME, free parking, great customer service, quick DNS info switches.... they're the best deal around, and the prices are even lower for multiple years :).

I've used the combo of registerclub.com ($10 to register the domain name) with zoneedit.com, which gives free DNS for up to 5 domains, including free domain parking, URL forwarding, mail forwarding.

If I choose Freeservers.com as you (CWPC) said, can I let it host my domain been registered with Domainzero?
Please give me some advices. Thanks

What if I want to have my own server, i.e. off my DSL line here at home? What do I have to do to register a domain name and then get the DNS directed to my box?

I used domaindirect.com to register my site. It's not as cheap as some of the others, but I like the features. You have a "control panel" which lets you set the IP address which the domain should be forwarded to. If I ever need to change ISP's, it would be easy to switch my IP as well.

<< i wonder how these folks make their money ? >>

It cost registrar's ~$6 to register a domain. "Free" registrar's either (1) retain ownership of your domain, or (2) (if the domain is in your name) will start charging you after 12 months.

If you're not the admin, you can't modify the DNS. It would seem that would just as important.

Pacificroot.com is inexpensive and great customer service.

I purchased a bunch of domains once for 5 bucks a piece and then found out I didn't own them. I only had the right to use them. Big scam. Even after looking through the license agreement it was hard to understand that language. The thing that really sucked, is that I was forced to upgrade through them and that costed another 35 bucks a piece. $40 total for one domain name. Bummer...
