Not really a hot deal. Directv has had this offer for more than 2 years now. I used to work for the main site in Boise, ID. It's still a good deal though. The 1 year subscription isn't too bad.

BTW, if you have a big screen tv, you'll notice the difference instantly when you switch from cable.
HUGE difference. DirectTV rocks IMHO! 😀

Dish is ok as well 😛

anyone have directtv out there? is it true that during thunderstorms the reception gets screwed up like in the commercials?

is it hard to install? I live in an apartment and might be moving out in 6 months. Will I be able to take it apart and move it to my new apartment?

also what package do you guys recommend?

I live in Portland, OR where it rains eight or nine months out of the year, and I've had DirecTV for years. There's probably only one or two instances a year where the signal is interrupted.

DirectTV = better channels but you have to signup for 1 year contract and pay extra for additional rooms

Cable = all cable companies are shady so basically you're going to be dealing with a shady company but you are on a month to month so you can cancel anytime.

Dish = somewhat cheaper than directtv but channels not that good

i live near Baltimore, MD, and the most my service would get disrupted on average is once a month for about 15 minutes when a storm is brewing, at it's worst

there has been an instance where it was off for about 30 minutes, but that was a really bad storm

also, if you have snow in your area, make sure you put ur dish in an area that's easy to reach when it snows. i had to broom the snow off my dish one time when we had a snow storm, it was the day they captured saddam hussein, but that's the only time i had to do that. lucky for me it's attached to my deck and i just stepped out and brushed it off

i live in Florida. during the summers here, we often get intense thunderstorms in the afternoon. DTV will go out when there is a bad thunderstorm between me and the southwest sky(where the satellite is). it usually doesn't stay out for long. if it's just a regular run-of-the-mill rainshower, it usually doesn't go out. compared to my local cable provider, i'd say DTV goes out slightly more often. not by much though.

since you live in an apartment and may be moving soon, you can get a tripod stand for the dish. keep in mind that if it's bumped or knocked over, you'll have to re-align it to the satellite. it's not hard to do once you know the general area the dish needs to be pointed. all receivers come with a built in signal meter to align the dish. also, you can go to DTV's site and find the satellite co-ordinates for your zip code. i'd check them before signing up. generally speaking, you'll need an unobstructed view of the southwest sky(depends on where you live).

as for packages? get what you can afford.

in regards to the guy who says DTV channels are better than DISH... that's an opinion. both providers carry the major broadcast networks. there are some differences. check the package line-ups from both to see if one carries something you want.

personally, i've had DTV for 2 years. right now i am considering switching to DISH because the prices are cheaper, and they are offering free DVR equipment. sundish.com is making the switch to DISH even more attractive by offering $50 to certain online retailers. search these forums for sundish. there's thread already started about the deal. hurry, offer ends Friday.

whew! hope that helps.

right on the $$$ glove

exactly what i was thinking

oh, and yes, if snows alot in your area,be ready to brush off snow off of your dish. its only happened to me once, and that was after it snowed for a week straight. you just have to go and use a broom to brush off all that snow covering the dish.
I also live in a area where theres always high winds, but thats never affected my Direct TV.
BTW, they install it for new customers, and when you move, they will come out and install an all new one agian for you.
but when they did it, it looked very simple.

just a FYI

Since DirecTV and DISH carry almost all the same channels with the exception of some sports packages it is amusing that anyone would claim one is better than the other. Having recently purchased VoomTV I believe DISH will have somewhat of an advantage in the near future if HDTV is one of the reasons you're getting satellite TV. I recently got a 57" Sony and the flaws in picture quality of cable become very noticeable. The lack of having to make any sort of committment is why I'll be going with DISH. Plus they are offering 6 months of free HDTV.

question:

if you want dish or DirectTV in different rooms, do you need cables running from the satellite dish to the TV's each room or is it wireless?

you might be able ot use wireless rf adapters, but i haven't tried it

the only downside to directv is that you can't split a statellite dish signal, each reciever needs a dedicated line to the multiplexor

We didn't even loose it through 2 hurricanes last fall. We got the complete setup for 5 rooms free from expert a couple of years ago. It required a years subscription but if you move it goes with you. You will wonder why you didn't get it a long time ago. BTW no landlord apart, condo, etc can stop you from putting up a dish. Federal Law. See link on experts site.
Bottom line is the quality of the reception makes it worth more than cable, but ours is substantially cheaper, and with a new deal from Bell South we get ten bucks off our Direct tv bill every month, ten bucks off our cingular cell bill every month (x2 for 2 cell phones) and discounted dsl. Pretty hard to beat.

Be warned if you are going with either satellite company, they charge you 4.99 per month if you don't have a land line that you can hook up to your reciever. As I only have a cell (Unlimited Metro PCS w/ Long distance is only $40 per month in Atlanta) I get fleeed of 60 a year by Dish Network.

Unless something has changed, I know a couple of people who have DirecTV and no landline... With no extra charges.

Yup, same here. never hooked up the landline, even when setting up. But the lady said if I wanted to add any more receivers (i currently have 3) i would need to hook it up the extra one to a landline, just for installation, then i can disconnect it.
