How is everyone attaching these things to their packages? It says not to tape over the UPC code. If they are so concerned about their UPC code being covered, it has to be scanned at some point.

I think delivery confirmation from USPS is worthless anyway. I only use it to prove that something got delivered. I agree that it should be free. UPS' tracking number is free and it's great.

Thanks for the freebie!!

Hrmm.. when i printed it out and took it down to the post office, they said i had to put money in before it's free. like some kind of meter mail. That i had to have an account with them. anybody else experience this?

Thanks

Welcome to the internet, where the consumer is more knowledgable about postal procedure than the post office people themselves.

It is free, and there is nothing to do. It is not metered mail. Tell them not to scan it, and not to charge for it. The # is entered electronically when you print the label, and is scanned later at the sort facility. If they act clueless tell them to see their manager.

Also print out the form with the "free" on top of it and show it to them.

I mail about a dozen things a week using this form. At first I had to educate my postal folks but now that they know it there's no problem.

Jeez... this pathetic half-confirmation means that the Post Office is STILL offering an inferior product to UPS, and charging more (in most cases.)

You got that right. Heres my crappy story with our great post office. (Its a one-man counter so i couldnt get help by anyone else)

Me: I'd like to ship this.
USPS: (she stares at the label) are you returning this?
Me: No. I'm just shipping it.
USPS: (Still staring at the label) How can you ship it. You have no postage.
Me: I know. I'm buying postage to ship it.
USPS: Well this is a return label.
Me: No. I printed this off the internet
USPS: Do you want shipping confirmation?
Me: Yes. Its included on the label
USPS: Yes. But do you want it? I have to charge you.
Me: No, theres no charge when you print it off the internet
USPS: Yes there is. I have to charge you because its shipping.

Damn these people....

I'll go you one better...I went to the website and filled out a couple of change of address forms. Wife went to drop them at the post office and they wouldn't take them because she'd left her id (never mind that the cards that they are usually done on are sent anonymously). So I go to another post office (the station that has to process them anyway, since we are moving from their territory). Wait in a horrendous line with only one employee working (of course). Another employee finally comes out, but then the two people in front of me seems to be trying to do something that requires thought. I finally get to the window with the forms I printed out, and the woman starts looking for the seal on them (hunh?). She then proceeds to ask me if they were form for power of attorney (What? Can't you read?). She then proceded to inform me that the official form was on a card that I could find on the table. Nevermind the fact that it was clearly labeled as being from the USPS web site, and having all of the official mumbo jumbo (government loves to put a bunch of numbers on forms - make it look way more important than it really is). So, as usual, the public is more informed of things rather than the post office (I guess that explains why the postal service is always losing money. Their employees largely don't seem to care, and they can't seem to get information down to the lower levels anyway, resulting in duplication and waste).

Gotta go fill out those cards...:disgust: :|

I guess I should consider myself lucky that my post office actually had someone that "got the memo". The 1st time I used the label the girl tacked on the charge for the confirmation. I told her it was free if you printed it off the internet. She thought for a minute and said she had heard someone talking about that earlier. Luckily the Supervisor was the one she had overheard. I've never had anyone in that post office question it since.

Salvador:

I had some AirBorne Express labels, that just happened to work. But I dont agree on (no tape). I tape over the address, and over a small part of the tracking barcode. I dont trust inkjet ink, and moisture it might pick up during shipping.

I used these for the first time yesterday. I just use the automated machine that weighs your package and spits out a stamp. I avoid the line and postal employees at all costs.

It always amazes me how the people in the line (with the cattle about to be slaughter look in their eyes) watch me use the machine with ahh and amazement like I'm some crazy risk taker, "look honey, he's using that fandangled computer thingy.... that's kooky!"

I use Endicia.com for the prepaid labels, and they have the free delivery confirmation built into their program. I get prepaid postage and free delivery confirmation so I don't have to wait in lines... which is priceless :)

Oh yeah, I print the labels on my UPS Eltron 2442 Thermal Label Printer... free labels, no ink, guaranteed no scanning problem :)

I wish we had USPS automated machines here. Even the local K-Mart and Home Depot have automated cashiers. I laugh when going through Home Depot and walking past the lines and cash myself out.

i wish USPS would accept credit cards and basically print the label prepaid so I don't have to wait in line @ the PO to deliver it. cheaper for them too since they don't need as much workers.

HAS ANYONE BEEN USING THE USPS SHIPPING ASSTANT SOFTWARE?

I have a complaint about this free service......... I have been using it off and on for a while now and was even starting to use the MEDIA rate, which is dirt cheap.... But most if not all of the Delivery Confirmation CODEs I am getting come back INVALID!!!!

Even after the item is delivered there is no record of it!!! Don't believe me ? Try a few of your labels!

Maybe I am doing something wrong but none of my packages ever registered in the system.

Now you can print Expressmail lables too.

Priority mail free confirmation still gets "what is this?" and "You have to pay for this!" some times.

Wish we could print other stuff too-like Return Receipt and Certified mail etc. online. But....

Any one knows free/cheap label printer which can print stamps/addresses?

One more thing, its a misconception to think that Priority Mail will be faster than First class mail.

Its workt only if you go over 2 lbs. So not worth for letters etc.

I have seen people stuffing 2-3 page letter in priority mail thinking it would go faster-it would not! You end up paying lot more for service which you are not going to get.

4-5 years back there was a controversy over this. Some post office would say that they would handle priority mail different than first class. Then other officials clarified that there is no difference between Priority Mail and First Class mail as far as delivery time it would take.

So beware.

Yeah but you can't get Delivery Confirmation on First Class mail... so if it's something I'm selling to another member or Ebay, I always go Priority. Because everyone appreciates fast shipping and it's nice to know that the person actually received the item.

As per my ongoing problem....

Their response:

Dear USPS Customer,

The DC numbers you provided have been manifested correctly in the database.
All DC numbers you have generated are manifested and do return information
on the tracking website/database. It is possible that the packages you are
having problems getting information for are just not being scanned at
delivery, which is an ongoing problem we have with some mail carriers. To
better correct this problem, when you know that a package has been
delivered, yet there was no delivery scan, please have either you or the
recipient contact the delivery post office to notify them of this problem.

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us.
