I just got a new office here at work...along with my coworkers. The problem is that we can't be as loud as we used to because there are a lot of quiet types around here. What I'm looking for is a server application that will allow us to communicate within the department. I want to keep it in-house so we can setup a chatroom that we all can be in to coordinate what we're doing rather than sending Emails all the time.

Does anyone know of a good application for this that's open source? I can run the server app on either SuSE Linux, Netware, or Windows 2000/2003 Server. Thanks-

GoogleTalk uses the Jabber protocol...nice, clean GUI so you should be set from there. GAIM is great, too.

Does GAIM have a chatroom function?

What about setting up a voice chat setup. Set up a private Ventrilo server. You could have conversations pretty easily (and quietly) if you wore headsets.
