I think that is actually an artillery piece, that the Bush administration wants to cancel due to cost and need. It weighs like 40+tons, and is very hard to transport to the battlefield. It was more envisioned for fighting massive tank battles with the Soviets.

The Crusader's effectiveness in todays combat environment is limited so they are trying to axe the
$10 Billion project. I agree - It is too heavy and not what we need in today's battlefield

You are absolutely correct, the crusader is mobile artillary, NOT a tank.

But tanks anyway for the good post yellowfiero!

I read where a Aussie company is trying to get the US army interested in its Metal Storm artillary piece since the Crusader is now dead, where using 36 barrels it can fire 1 million rounds in a minute, carpeting a 50m x 200m area.

the army wants Crusaders though. It fires 11 rounds a minute instead of the 3 rounds a minute of today's artillery.

Rumsfeld intially wanted it axed, though the Army disagreed. Now that Bush has stated that the program should be killed off, the Army has muted its public opposition--it is up to Congress to decide. The free posters are part of an expensive media campaign by the manufacturer to keep the program alive, even though there is little reason to have such an expensive system.

A group of three units could shower a target with 7 tons of artillery shells _simultaneously_ by firing multiple rounds at different trajectories which land at the same time. Sounds cool--but not necessary anymore.

The manufacturer is smart enough to spread the potential pork into multiple key districts around the country, thus keeping the program in the running. J.C. Watts, the most vociferous advocate for the Crusader, has the company in his home state. The existing Paladin system should suffice.

I'll pass on this.
