It's supposed to start tomorrow. CAN YOU ORDER NOW??????
I just ordered through the USPS link. Ooops, now the USPS knows my address! o_O

Edit: It said the kits will "start shipping in late January." I have to wonder how that will pan out. I also wonder what would happen if I try to order through the covidtest.gov site. Are the systems cross-linked?

"Your order #: <_______________________________________> has been placed.

If you provided your email address, we'll send you an order confirmation email and delivery updates."

Besides the 4 units offered to each person household directly by the gov, I'm hearing/reading that many private insurances and Medicare will also reimburse for more as @Leymenaide stated in their post.

edit: corrected info on # of kits avail

I was hearing 4/household on the news in recent days.

Edit:
Note:At-home COVID-19 tests will ship free starting in late January. USPS will only send one set of 4 free tests to valid residential addresses. We are unable to process duplicate orders for the same address.

There are two separate programs. One program is the free 4 per household starting today, Jan 18. This is the link in this thread.

The other program is that most health insurances must reimburse you 100% for up to 8 Covid tests per covered person per month (starting last Saturday, Jan 15). In the best case, you just get them for free at the pharmacy. In the worst cases, you pay for them and then fill out a form to have your insurance reimburse you.

Cigna is making me fill out a form for reimbursement. Allegedly, they are incentivized to cover costs up front by being able to cap costs, whereas the reimbursement process has no allowed cap; I wonder if companies would still bank on people not bothering to file for reimbursement.
