Great, but here is the question. How many of you are really going to install it on your machine? I don't know of any person that did it. I still have 5 disks with Solaris 8 somewhere. I tried to read the install info but it sounded so restrictive to me that I didn't dare. On the other hand I am running Linux Red Hat and Mandrake and even Caldera in my office without a problem. I think Sun is pretty much finished with this OS that is taken out not by Windows but by Linux.

Now that Sun has dropped the free Solaris binary program for SMP _capable_ machines (like my SS20),
I'd guess there are quite a few folks who aren't interested in dropping $95 for the Sol 9 media and/or
$300+ for a support agreement. Which is a long winded way of saying "I will definitely install Sol 9 on
my SPARC machine."

nice deal tho!

Actually it is to save shipping costs. I had a choice, and having an Ultra 1 at home, I got the BIG stack of CD's! So, it is available, but I guess not on this free offer!

P.S. I also signed up for free x86 to see if I get it. I do have dvd on p-4 machine. I will find out about x86 and let this group know!

Nope...it is called "Solaris 9 (Intel Platform Edition). Lots of docs on this I think you "guys" can get to this. I had been looking at an Internal web page. 😀

Solaris 9 - Intel

We appreciate your interest in the Solaris Operating Environment. Regrettably, overwhelming demand for the Solaris DVDs has exceeded quantities available, so this offer has expired.

Never procrastinate.....
