Free Comcast Speed Upgrade

These small speed 'upgrades' from comcast are just the tip of the iceberg. With Verizon FIOS service that rolled out in my town this month, residents on comcast are saying bye bye.

It's a no brainer with more than 3 times the speed and at the same time $5 less per month ($39.95 for me w/ basic phone svc which I already had).

The Verizon service rep told me on the phone they are getting a huge demand. They will be expanding their service at faster rate and I bet they'll eat comcast's lunch unless the cable company gets more competitive.

Maybe there is some technological reason why they can't do it, but I think comcast is nuts to just offer me a speed 'bump' from 3mbs to 4mbs a month or so ago, since they were aware FIOS is coming to town. I was one of the first customers in town to sign up on cable internet and have stayed with them thru roadrunner, then attbi, now comcast. I'm still renting my orig motorola 3100 from them (I know, what a waste of money in rental fees). But that is money comcast is about to lose - many times over.

Once I make the switch to FIOS (Apr 6 install), I'm not going to the hassle of switching back (email address, etc) unless there is a very compelling reason.

Message to Comcast:

Contact customers a few months prior to FIOS service rollout - before they get the Verizon letter offering service. Offer them 10mbs d/l - 1.5mbs u/l for $29.95/mo.
If they offered me that, I don't think I would have switched. I don't really need 15mbs right now (can't afford the HD space - but I'll take it 🙂 ).

Anyone know if Verizon is blocking ports on their FIOS product? I'm wondering because I pay $699 per month for a T1 at work and IIRC, the FIOS stuff is faster at uploads (1.54 vs 2.0). Currently I house my personal servers at work with the boss's permission, but if I had a 2MB/s link at home then I'd do it from there.

Anyone know?

Joe

Comcast doesn't stand a chance once FIOS becomes fully implemented. 15mb/2mb for 50 a month.

Which will take as long as it took Comcast to be available in most places.

My area is covered by SBC... AFAIK FIOS will not be deployed in regions covered by SBC, Bellsouth, and Quest.

So it looks like I won't have a choice for a while.

I hate Comcast too but they got the Chicago burbs hooked up with the new speed upgrade. 🙂 I finally have enough upload speed to host a proper server of some sort.

Bay Area gets it speed boost finally. (If you get the network upgrade email but didn't notice speed change, you may have to power cycle your modem.)
