I have Chase and apparently it costs no less than $13 ($25+ for anything with designs) plus shipping when it used to be free... they're tightening up on everything. Is there a way to get free checks anymore?

While we do most banking with online bill pay, we need it for paying kids' tuition, water district, etc.

You don't have to buy checks from the bank. You can pay like $4 for 250 checks from an outside source. There's a Slickdeals thread about it that's been going on for years. The most recent incarnation is here: http://slickdeals.net/f/3791556

The last time that I bought checks (8 years ago) was through the Costco Web site. It was a lot less expensive than the bank, but I don't remember the cost.

Charles Schwab Bank offers free checks and all kinds of other nice stuff if you're looking to open a new account at a better bank.

*Thread resurrection* Well I'm finally about to run out of checks so I need a deal somewhere and can't find the latest slickdeals thread.

Also another question is how do these custom checks work with routing number and account number? I actually have to write it in each time?

You give the check printing company that info.

Credit unions sometimes have free checks for members, and depending on the bank, if you have enough money in the accounts, they'll give you free checks.

I purchased my checks from checksinthemail.com. You can get a great deal when they have sale/special. They have a sale right now of 125 checks for $10.

You order new checks by send them a void check with your account number and routing number on it or you can provide that online (secured).

Technically you can scribble your account number, routing info, amount, and signature on the back of a cocktail napkin, but the business that you give it to has the right to refuse it.

If you want to create a bit less drama, you can order check blanks and print them on your home printer.

Otherwise, use one of the cheap check printing services like Svnla mentioned.

Online bill pay will send physical checks if they can't do it electronically. That's how I pay for my "legacy" bills. That's how it works at boa anyway. I'd assume chase is the same.
