I keep reading people talk about which cd-rs are great quality. Does anyone have some information to support a particular brand (other than opinion and experience). I've purchased many of these and I have noted some are of lower quality (especially at higher speeds or when used in other non-pc cd players). I'd love to get this info and I think that it would greatly benefit us all.

I want to try to avoid the collection of bad cd-r media and only stock pile the quality stuff.

Thanks... Chris

I went through 50 of the KHypermedia with my 24x burner and never had a single problem. Can't comment on the logevity of the disks, only burned em about a year ago max.

Anyone know about Memorex CD-Rs? I'm thinking about gettin in on that.

I avoid the Maxell discs - my car stereo doesn't like them. Other than that, I've never had any problems with cdrs, and I've used some REALLY crappy ones (like the ones that CC sometimes has - 200 for free, there's no brand on them, they're just plain silver tops)

I don't know whether Maxell are always manufactured by the same company (they are just labeled I am sure) but I can agree that my home cd player and car cd changer sometimes played them and sometimes didn't. I did not try them in other cd players but those electronics of mine are fairly new....

I don't mean to crap, but bad linky.. very old data. However one useful tidbit is if you look attheir chart, discs made by Taiyo Yuden are usually the best. From experience (yeah, I know) and various tech/CDR web pages I've read over the past two years, a good rule of thumb is "Made in Japan" will always be good, "Made in USA" will usually be good, and "Made in Taiwan" is usually crap. I heard we should be seeing Chinese discs soon, but the quality of those is yet to be determined (rumored to be low-quality).

the Maxell cd-rs at Staples are 650mb...bad for SVCD's :disgust: Why do they even make 650 mb cd's anymore?

Are ALL Fuji's TYs? I bought a spindle once when they were on sale at BB. I did not know they were TYs, but I had that feeling (yeah, I know) they should be good. I used to like Fuji high-bias cassette tapes.

I would definitely buy them again once they go on sale at BB again. But are they all TYs?

BTW, to pre-empt some questions, and spoil some fun for some of you, cassette tapes are magnetic media popular in 1960s - early 1990s for sound recording and even CD ripping. :)

The Best buy rebate for the Maxell CDs say something like "limit one rebate per item" and doesn't say anything like "one per person." Does that mean I can get as many as I want for $2.99 (if I send out all the rebates, of course)?

Sorry if it's a dumb question.. I haven't dealt with rebates much.

You have to look at the package. Made in Japan=TY, Made in Taiwan=not TY

For the past couple years, I've never seen any FujiFilm that weren't TY. A couple people on this board have said they've recently seen FujiFilm made in Taiwan, but neither I or my friends have seen that in any store. Always check for "Made in Japan" to be sure.

I love the fuji's...even though I am still waiting for my rebate.

but what's the deal with the new colored discs...just plain nasty. i refrained myself from purchasing them cause of it...but last time i checked the discs didn't seem colored.

anyone who recently purchased it know for sure?

why wait for the fujifilm TY's to go on sale again when you can just go and pick up the Memorex TY's at best buy now. I went around Best Buy once looking for good cdrs. I had heard that the Memorex "made in japan" ones were TY's. I couldn't find any 50 pack "made in japan" ones but SOME of the memorex 100 packs are "made in japan" and some are "made in taiwan." My best buy had both of those 100 packs of Memorex. The packaging on the made in japan and made in taiwan cdrs are different so happy hunting. i believe the made in taiwan pack was a big spindle with a memorex insert placed in it while the made in japan one had a full plastic cover around the whole spindle. So i picked up a pack today. i feel sorry for the people who picked up the other spindle. :)

Hope that helps,
JP

I saw Emtec 50-CD spindle at K-Mart (yes, they are still in business :) ). Are they any good?

Emtec spindle grabbed my attention because their logo was just like BASF logo. Knowing BASF as a magnetic media leader in Europe, I checked out Emtec's website. Even though I did not find a direct reference to BASF, I am 110% sure it is BASF.

Any experience with BASF / Emtec?

Nope, not at all. Stick the CD in and run CDRIdentifier (search on Google if you don't have it) and feel free to post the results. :)

Well, this weekend went better than I expected. I thought I would get some HP TY's for $10, but the closest Sears in my area turned out to be 20 by 20 feet large and has only two 4-feet isles with electronics :frown: There was one large Sears nearby, but it got closed last summer :(

For the guys who are waiting for Fuji's, you can get 50pack Memorexes at CC , it turns out they are also TY, popped one the CDrom drive, the id is TY's - 97m24s01f. Of course be sure to check for screw-lid-top and "made in Japan" since they were mixed with Taiwan crap. There were no price tags on those so I had to ask a clerk to check it, it was $14.99 minus 10MIR of course. Also picked up supposedly "free" 50pack jewel cases after MIR at OM, there weren't any directly on the shelves but there were a bunch of them packed into pairs of 2 making 100pack way way up. I asked associate and he kindly ripped the plastic and gave me one 50pack, so that went well. I was also amused when the sales associate gave me a 28 page flyer with all the rebates at OM

I thought they would upgrade their systems by now to print out the rebate with the sales receit...

Bumping the thread - $5 for 50 TY's is a good deal...

And if you are gonna buy one - hurry, the promotion ends on saturday and the fine print on the rebate says that you have to send the rebate no later than saturday too...

I want some of these. I'm tired of the dull-looking CDs. Are the colored ones TYs? If so, that would be awesome. Would be easier to identify disks. Would be even cooler if you could buy whole spindles of one color. One color for audio CDs, another color for SHNs, another for photos, etc. That would be great.

So has anyone seen colored TYs?

i think you might be able to bypass the rebates @ CC because CC's new policy is that they will price-match the after rebate price of a competitor if they themselves do not have a rebate.... and CC does have the 100 pack memorex(but no rebates)...so:

$44.99 (100pack memorex @ CC)
-38.50 (110% pricematch to BB's $9.99 after rebates)
----------
$6.49 for 100pack of memorex from CC(no rebates)

please correct me if my math is wrong  or if the CC pricematch policy is wrong or if i'm missing something

Hey, how do you identify a CD? Where do I find properties for a blank CDR I stick into the drive. I've been looking around windows properties and Roxio ECC and haven't bumped into the info.
