Branded, I just picked up the cable modem and a $100 RS gift card for $106.98 total with tax and didn't have to sign up for anything. I even told the salesdroid I already had cable access and he said no prob. So give it another shot!

I'm in OR too, and my @home service is splendid. TimidOCer, let me know what you find out from your calls to the stores in this area.

all cable plans differ slightly..here in the bay area ist $39.95 including the modem lease, and $10 less w/o the modem....

ANYONE WANNA BUY THESE MODEMS AND SELL EM TO US>>>?? I think most of us will gladly pay the $100 plus "bonus" of ,say $30, to get the modem and $100 RS Gift card! Or if you needed the Radio Shack credit anyways, we can make a deal just for the modem and you keep the gift card!

Well I live in Berkeley, CA. and I just called a local Radio Shack. The guy told me they don't even carry cable modems right now but that they will in the future. When I asked him when, he said "it could be next week, it could be in 3 months". I asked him about if Radio Shack has deals only in certain parts of the country and he said "sometimes there's promotional tests in certain areas, but usually the deal will become active all over". So hopefully, it's only a matter of time before the rest of us get in on this deal.

I got one in MD. Nothing to sign, I did not use my credit card. And it is a usb cable modem. My current cable modem is an ethernet cable modem. Usb is everywhere now. Pretty soon we'll have usb sex toys.

Sorry stupid question, but I just have to be sure. You have to get cable tv in order to get cable internet service right? I'd always assumed this, but I don't think I've ever seen it written

edit: Thanks HKS. Guess I was wrong all along. Can someone post a site that compares all the cable internet services in your area?

Not a stupid question... on the contrary, you don't have to get cable tv, but when they install your cable modem, the cable tv signal is included... (note I didn't say cable tv was included, just the signal...)

But it is ILLEGAL (as I am informed by someone e-mailing me...) to try to get the signal... so don't do it! Or don't go crying when you're penitentiary bound... =)

Goog40, No you do not have to subscribe to Cable tv to get cable Modem and ISP service. You will however require the cable (obviosly) and with most comanies @home and Media1 for sure you will have to pay a premium say about $10 per month more to have cable ISP and not have Cable TV.
In my area if you have any level of Cable TV serive that modem/ISP will run you 39.95/Month
without cable tv its 49.95/Month for the modem and ISP service

Supposedly cable companies have some sort of filter they could put on your line to prevent you from getting cable tv if you only paid for internet service, but it is too expensive for it to be worth their time ususally.

Branded,
where is the Radio shack you got the modem? Any address?

Anybody has the SKU# on it?

The SKU number is: 1603530. I picked up 2 of them today - one for a friend and one for myself. Getting 2 of them was no small feat because I had to provide a different address for the 2nd one - due to the limit of "one per household". I was ready to get about 8 of them to hook a few others in this forum up, but that would have been pretty impossible.

There is also a second SKU number involved: 1603531 - which is for the $29.99 "quick start" kit. That item appeared on my receipt along with a charge of $249.99 for the modem and finally a credit of $180 bringing the total to $100 + tax. Also, there is an entry for the $100.00 gift card towards the top of the receipt. With this deal, you are essentially purchasing the modem for $100 and getting the $100 gift card for free - that's how it's displayed on my receipt and that's how the salesperson explained it. The salesperson also indicated that they will be offering other deals - with other cable companies shortly - so keep your eyes on your local Radio Shack stores.

Now for the stumper: The serial number and MAC address both appeared on my receipts. I can understand the serial number issue, but not the reason for recording the MAC address. I plan on using this with Cox R.R. cable and hopefully there won't be any issues.

Also, the salesperson forgot to include the "quick start" kits in my bag, so I need to give them a call since the store is one hour from where I live.

The location where I found mine: The Columbia Mall Radio Shack store in Columbia, Maryland.

Good luck to y'all!!!

The @home service uses the MAC address for validation. Friend had trouble with his modem and they had to wait for the new modem to be added to the validation list. I had taken a router over to his home to add two computers to the cable modem and left my validation name in the router and it let us on the network thru his modem.
