Free CA Virus Protection

anyone ever use this "eTrust EZ Armor" ?

I use the corporate version at home. Mandated by my company since I VPN into the network occassionally. Kind of a resource hog so I only fire it up when I do vpn in.

This is supposed to be a trimmed version of the corporate version so maybe not so bad.

I use the eTrust EZ Armor AV and have for over a year. I got it initially when it was offerred free (like this deal) and then went on to pay for it after that year ran out. I can just say, "It works". No problems, no viruses; you almost never know it's there. It takes care of updates as to how you set it up, then downloads and installs them without having to restart your system. Definately a hot deal if it's free again.

Is it true that you're forced to install their firewall with the AV?

I just saw this posted on HardOCP. I'm downloading it now for my laptop. According to the antivirus bulletin site, this AV suite is better than AVG or Avast.

You don't need to install the Firewall. In the install wizard, uncheck the EZ Trust Armor checkbox and it will let you uncheck the Firewall option.

My personal choice has been AVG Anti-Virus, Free Edition. Free software, free updates, and works great on my systems. They've had the free edition for awhile, it lacks a few features that IMO the typical user won't need anyway.
The CA deal is great, don't get me wrong, I just wanted to link an anternative.

Thanks, I can always use another free virus software, I have had good luck with the FREE CA antivirus server software.

Used EZ trust Armor for two years. It has stopped many viruses and does not overload my system like Norton and Panda did (Panda took forever scanning Zip files).

The Firewall is really Zone Alarm Pro in a CA package. What I did was sign up for the free trial, then they sent me an email for a special offer of $34 or something for the EZ Armor. This is a lot cheaper than Zone Alarm, plus you get Antivirus. Even without the free trial it is a good deal.

The software is very good, runs light on the system, had a great pop-up blocker, and stops viruses.

If I remember correctly I recall reading somewhere that renewals were $10 a few years ago. Does anyone know what the price is now?

I had it when it was all the time free for consumers and now they are going back to that but with the idea of getting you to buy it at the end of the year - I'll say its as good as symantec but maybe just under Macaffe..

CA used to offer a great free AV program, InnoculateIT. I used it for a long time until they discontinued support for it when virus technology exceeded the abilities of the basic program. If you don't already have good AV software, I would trust the quality of their product. They also have a great Virus Information Center which includes links to search their Virus Encyclopedia. If you're ever stuck looking for virus info, and you can't find it on Norton or other sites, check CA.

Zone Alarm is another story. I use Zone Alarm ver. 2.6.362, which I believe is the last good version. Versions 3.xx absolutely suck for several reasons:

1. The uninstall program does NOT work. It causes "missing vxd" and "missing dll" errors that require skillful registry editing, just to get back where you started before the installation.

2. They went for a soft "touchy-squishy-feely" look that uses more resources to provide less information than the older version. My current version reports the IP address, the port from which it was sent, and the port it tried to hit on my machine for every hit. The info is available on screen when I want it. To get the same info from ZA 3.xx, I had to scroll through a mountain of logged info.

3. I've read far too many reports that it is a resource hog and causes many other problems.

I don't know about ZA 4.5, but for now, I trust my old version which I have installed on everything from Win 95 to XP Pro with no problems, either in operation or, when necessary, uninstalling.

Hmmmm, McAfee nor CA have txyp in their data base. Besides that the AV should offer you an option for handling it if it found it. Weird
