free audio recording software?

is there any software that is sort of like windows sound recorder except that it saves to .mp3 and supports at least 5 min long recordings.

if there aren't any free software for this is there any pay for software?
 
To reitterate, Audacity is reeeeaaaaallllly awesome.

You must also download the lame codec on their site and then point to the file the first time you try to convert an audio file to mp3. Its ez.

you could change your recording input from MIC to 'what u hear' if you have a decent sound blaster card (old or new) and drivers.

or you can use a program to DL the stream
maybe CoCSoft Stream Down (not free)
 
I have a Razer Barracuda AC-1. Are you saying I can change the option to what i hear in my card's drivers, and not in audacity's menus?
