This is going on at most CompUSA stores in the south east. If you buy a Maxtor ATA 100 30 GB HD for $129 you will get a free pci ATA 100 controller card (worth $50 bucks)

Here's the link to the Maxtor website with the promotion info. Just click on Promotions on the left side of the screen.
http://www.maxtor.com/MaxtorHome.htm

According to the rebate information on this second promotion you can get the rebate on the controller card with just about any size Maxtor drive. In the first promotion you were limited to 40GB and above. You don't have to buy the card and the drive at the same store or at the same time.

I just ordered a Maxtor 20GB 5400RPM (plan to use it as a backup drive) for $70 + tax at staples.com. The drive is $99.99, added the MSN starter kit for .01 then a $30 off $100 coupon. I plan to buy the controller card at OD B&M using a $15 off $50 coupon. My final cost should be $55 + tax (~$8 for me) after coupons and rebate for the drive and controller card.

ok i am going to show what an idiot i am, but can anyone help me here

my 1-year old computer came with a maxtor 30 GB/7200 RPM HD & the Promise ATA-66 controller card

here's my question, if i want to add a 2nd hard drive does each HD need it's own controller card, or can the ATA 100 controller card work with both drives, or should both drives each have their own control card (66 for the original, 100 for the new)

any advice greatly appreciated

You should be able to run both hardrives off one ide channel on the ata66 controller card...just set one as master and the other as slave (or if it's some funky drive, you might have to set it as "master with slave present")

Also, ATA100 isn't much better than ATA66. There aren't many ways to make the difference significant.

Hahhaha, my goodness, hasnt EVERYONE gotten in on this ATA/100 PCI card deal yet? I got my 40gb and ATA/100 card at least 2 months ago when the 40gb was $109 or something like that. Sent in the rebate for the ATA/100 card and all. It should be on its way soon!

Oh well, if you havent got that free ATA/100 card yet, you should, its a great deal (and worth some money if you sell it on eGay! :))

Hi guys...I just have a question as I'm thinking about buying this drve....I looked on the compusa website and other websites to look at the circuit city drive, and it seems to be a ATA 66 hard drive. Sorry if I sound stupid, but why do you need a ATA 100 card if the drive is only ATA 66??? Or is there something else I'm missing? Thanks a lot.

Man, and some people think SCSI is confusing...but I will never go back to IDE, not the way it was treating me. I like having my drives not use my CPU. IDE always took a giant chunk of my processing power and it was just not worth it. But thats ok for you guys, cus you WILL be upgrading in a year or two, right?
