Judge blocks 'robo-calls' selling auto warranties

CHICAGO (AP) -- A federal judge has issued a pair of temporary restraining orders to halt what officials describe as a wave of "robo-calls" warning people their auto warranties are expiring and offering new service plans.

U.S. District Judge John F. Grady issued a temporary restraining order against Transcontinental Warranty Inc. on Thursday and one against Voice Touch Inc. on Friday.

The Federal Trade Commission filed suit against the companies in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Thursday. Chairman Jon Leibowitz says the FTC "has disconnected the people responsible for so many of these annoying calls."

Officials say Americans have gotten as many as 1 billion of the random prerecorded phone calls. Grady's orders also freeze the companies' assets.

Im glad they also froze the companies assets. I think they are going to have to pay up for harrassing consumers over 1 billion times!

I got these calls too many times to count, wonder why it took so long for them to be shut down?

another company will just fill the void. This is some never ending shit, why does the government waste it's time and money fighting it when they'll never win? I bet within 5 days I'll be getting calls from some new company. I bet the CEO of this one already has sold his phone # database.

I'm guessing the telemarketers will now try and sell a device to block....telemarketers.

You want the government to ignore it? 😕 I don't know about you, but for me this is a relatively recent phenomenon. There were no constant calls from the same telemarketer before these car warranty guys came along, so I don't know why you'd assume someone else will fill the void, especially after these guys get smacked down by the government.

Also, what database? These people don't know anything about you, they just call numbers at random.

When I got my last one I pressed the talk to a person button. I then proceeded to repeat fuck you, fuck you, until he said I will take you off our list. Havn't gotten a call since.

I got one of those a few months back.

I was like, "whoa! I got the best warranty ever!". My car is 22 years old. That's some warranty.

I've always gotten a lot of calls from telemarketers, even with the Do Not Call list. I suspect I will get just as many in the future. I didn't get any more from the one they just blocked. So basically the government is throwing money away. This company will be replaced with another, doing the exact same thing, until they are busted. And another will replace them when that happens. Something more needs to be done.

22 years?! That had to be one expensive warranty!

No, the government is not throwing money away. The government is enforcing its laws. You say you get calls from telemarketers despite being on the do not call list, but I do not. So for me, making these companies stop will be beneficial. Punishing companies that break the law is the only way to create a disincentive to break the law.

 FTC.

There's no disincentive to not break the laws, many telemarketing firms train their people to not give out any information when a person complains they want to be put on a DNC list. Try asking the next who calls you what's the name of their company, I bet $5 you won't get an answer, at least not an honest one. You are lucky, as I get calls every day and when I ask to speak to a supervisor or get a phone # I get hung up and called back the next day. The government isn't doing shit to stop them from calling my house so to me my tax dollars are being WASTED here. no 2 ways about it.

The FTC is the worst quasi-government agency that exist today. It is so politically influenced and does a lot of things under the whole, "it's best for the consumers" facade. I cannot wait until their chairman, Jon Leibowitz, and two of their commissioners, Pamela Harbour and Thomas Rosch get out.

You want to talk about a waste of taxpayer money, look into both Rambus and Whole Foods. They actually had to officially dismiss their case against Rambus yesterday after losing with their own Administrative Law Judge, district court of appeals and the Supreme Court. In the most expensive case in FTC history, they tried (and failed) to ignore legal rulings and use their commissioners as plantiff, jury and judge.

The last time I got one of those calls, I picked the talk-to-person option and asked why I was getting telemarketing calls to a cell phone. I haven't had one since.

I imagine there will be others to take up the slack. As long as there are stupid consumers that make it worthwhile for them to do this stuff, someone will do it. That doesn't mean the laws should not be enforced though, the FTC is doing what it's supposed to do. I hope they not only take the assets, but put those behind this stuff in jail for a while to set an example. Taking the money doesn't do a lot since the crooks already probably used most of it or hid it overseas. Putting them in jail for 10 years sets a good example for anyone else who wants to try it.

Obviously some in this thread must be doing it wrong as ever since the do-not-call list I haven't gotten a telemarketing call since. Granted the warranty ones don't apply to this, and I've been lucky enough to not even remember getting one. Only warranty ones I get are official ones from my auto maker.

damnit, next time they called i was going to try to get them to send me information so that i could sue them 🙁

last time they called they asked the make, model, and year
"2008 mazda3 that i bought two months ago, i'm shocked, absolutely shocked, that the warranty is about to expire!"
he hung up

They did everything they could to not be found. This included spoofing caller id and hanging up if you ask who they worked for.
