From eDeal & TechBargains:
SOYO - P4VGA - VIA Pentium 4 Socket 478 ATX Motherboard with Audio, AGP4X/2X, IrDA, USB 2.0, and 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN Support Free after $62.99 rebate (Exp 3/16) $12 shipping

Is this MB anygood? For the price of shipping, it doesn't seem too bad. I've always wanted to try building my own system. Seems like this is an inexpensive way to start.

thanks for the contribution, but instead of ordering from tigerdirect and being pissed when the rebate doesnt show, why dont you just pay for someone to knee you in the groin and get it over with faster

instead of gambling with tigerdirect....
i'd recommend almost any of the weekly Fry's cpu/motherboard combo's.

with a decent combo price, you're basically getting the mobo for free... and NO REBATE involved!

I don't get it. I know Tiger Direct's reps are rough (probably an understatement some may argue). But I bought my first and second motherboards from them in 98-99 when I started building my own and got my rebate from them for a tape drive I bought a few years back. Shipping is $12 so a 478 mobo for that price should still qualify as a hot deal, I think. Besides, it looks like the rebate is from Soyo. Anyone have any experience or problems with Soyo rebates?

Kipper717 is asking if the board is any good -- which is the same question that I have. I think Kipper717 should be encouraged for building his own rig.

I don't think anyone here is trying to discourage him from building his own pc they are trying to enlighten him on the highly likely chance that he will get screwed by TigerDirect. ttown said he should try fry's so I don't see the discouragement. And as far as a Intel Board with a Via chipset. I would highly recommend against it.

Yeah the rebate does go to soyo...I'm still not convinced it's worth the risk. I'd probably have to agree you're better off going with a fry's combo deal.

My experience with the Via chipset for Intel procs is when I load most of the PCI slots, I had problems making all the boards work together, which is why I shifted to Intel-chipset based mobos. No such problems with my current system and 3 other Intel-chipset based rigs I built for my son, daughter, and myself. But the Via problem I had was years ago and it was hard to tell then if if it was the mobo, the chipset, or the boards that caused the problems. I'm hoping Via might have improved compatibility over the years and maybe worth a second look. (I'm looking into upgrading my BX-chipset rig.) What is your experience with Via/Intel boards?

My Soyo rebate from a product I bought thru TD arrived... after 9 months a phone call and 3 emails.
NOT a good company for rebates. Buyer beware...

Tiger Direct has caused problems for so many people that many people won't do business with them.

I remember back in the mid 90's, I had a consulting client order some networking hardware. They billed the credit card but didn't actually have the part in stock. After several months of "it's in the mail" excuses, we finally contested the charge and bought the part elsewhere.

It made me look like a clueless idiot for suggesting them as a parts source and I've never been back.

are they still that bad? Their Resellerratings have come way up.
All my dealings with them were good but I never had to depend on them for a rebate either.

I bought a Soyo case and a Soyo usb flash drive on BF 2002 from Fry's and it took until the next May to get the rebates from Soyo. And that was after a group of us contacted Soyo's president.

TD has a notorious reputation with CS and Rebates. Recently I purchased several video cards from them and had rebate problems with the manufacturer. I contacted Richard Wallet from TD and once he received my "proof" TD immediately credited the amount of the rebate to my CC. Now how many retailers back the manufacturer's rebate. This is my first and only time a retailer has done so for me. I then purchased a 17" LCD and received the rebate. I am fine with them.

As for Soyo - my experience with them is not too good. I never received the 2.0 USB card that was supposed to have come with my motherboard purchase. Contacting them was like talking to myself. If I was ever to do a Soyo rebate I will only do it with TD because in the experiences I have had with them the rebates they post on thier site have always (with some effort) come back. Anything Soyo - expect an effort, especially money, let alone a RMA.
