player not region free? people having trouble finding hacks for it. i'm screwed if i can't play region 2 dvds. lol.

Hey, I didnt even think of that. Thanks for the idea. I do have a spare 6x creative dvdrom layin around.

EDIT: I just opened up the unit to take a look (this voids the warranty, though the warranty does not work if you did not buy the unit from an authorized dealer, which i doubt viking is). It does not look like a standard dvd-rom drive to me. Its very bare, without any dvdrom metal casing around it. There's no IDE connector or Molex connecter to be found.

Yes it is, what do you have, a black American express card? I dont know what that has to do w/ this thread through.

I heard there was an apex dvd player that took a Divx upgrade and would play divx movies. Can anyone check to see if this is one of those?

I think someone with a VERY HUGE credit limit should buy one of the $99,999 items. Let's see if this online company will automatically cancel the order due to a "price error". They sure are ready to cancel when they lose money but I don't know if they would cancel when making money...
He was replying to my suggestion.

[/b]EDIT: [/b] btw, a quick question for you guys that already got your package. On my order summary it says "Status: Delivered" and in the Order Summary it lists "Apex Digital AD-1165...". Does this mean that I will be getting it or is it still not certain if they substituted it? For those that got a substitution, did you Order Summary show a different product?

Audioreview

I purchased one of these years ago for $300. It couldn't even get through a single SACD or DVD-A without locking up or cracking up, etc. I returned it.

I hope they fixed them.

That's gotta be a really old article. They mention the price being $279! And, it was just weird reading all that audiophile stuff with regards to an APEX unit. I'm no audiophile, but I would've never thought an APEX would even be mentioned by one. Anyways, sounds promising, I guess I'll trying breaking it in when I receive it.

My apologies then for suggesting that. I was under the impression that they used (cheap) PC DVD-ROM drives, at least the early Apex units did. (this link at least still claims that.)

There is a link to some (pretty-much all negative) reviews here .

The difference is, most of them paid $250-400 for the unit. From reading the reviews, it appears that the unit may use a combo DVD/CD optical pickup unit made by Sony, of the same era of the early PS2 game consoles, and suffers from the same type of disc-read defects, unfortunately. That might also explain why the units were not produced with low-cost PC DVD-ROM-type drives, as I don't believe that Sony made any at that time using their new optical pickup design.

News article discussing the introduction of the AD-7701 in Dec. of 2001 here .

Here is a link to a page about someone swapping the drive from a different DVD player unit, maybe that would help?
