If you have others that seem good, add them in. :):)

Virus scanning:

FREE ONLINE VIRUS scan of your PC by PANDA

FREE ONLINE VIRUS scan of your PC by TREND MICRO

Free Download of AVG anti-virus software

Previous Anandtech Thread on free 1 yr. trial of Panda Platinum (thx.Master Chef)

Spyware scanning:

ZoneAlarm's Spyware detector!

Free Download of Ad Aware*

Free Download of Spybot

Free Download of Spy Sweeper

Free Download of HiJack This

*Ad Aware is free only for personal use, not for institutional or business use.

Firewall:

Free Download of Zone Alarm

Edit: forgot the firewall!

I use the following on my computers: They are all free for personal use

Spywareblaster

It prevents spyware from being installed in the first place.

Kerio Personal Firewall 4

Limited free edition
For home users, Kerio Personal Firewall 4 is available in two flavors - the full edition and the limited free edition.

After installation, KPF works as the full edition for 30 days, after which it becomes the limited free edition.

Limited free edition does not provide the content filtering capabilities such as blocking pop-up windows, ads, VB scripts, cookies, etc. and other extra features. Please see the comparison table for more details

A-Squared

a² is a complementary product to antivirus software. It provides specialist protection against harmful software. Antivirus software is not enough! a² provides protection against Trojans, Dialers and Spyware. a² fills the gaps that malware writers exploit.

don't settle for avg as your antivirus!! bitdefender 7 is actually free!!

BitDefender 7 Free Edition

It has automatic updates and scheduled scanning. I think it even comes with BitDefender's firewall as an option with installation. And with its detection rates, there's really no point in keeping avg. :)

are there any good free antitrojan scanners? the best one i like is tds-3, but its not free. :(

everybody knows avg is free. lol with its horrid detection rates they wouldn't be known if it only costed money! i'm saying that bitdefender ranks very high up there in its detection rates compared to avg and surprisingly its free. bitdefender is (afaik) the highest rated free antivirus besides avast (but free avast looks like crap ;)).

i've tried a squared and its interface is very nice although i don't particularly like the registration they make you go through. so far i'd say its my favorite free anti-trojan. does anybody have a roundup?

For those who know how to tweak a firewall, check out www.looknstop.com. Look'N'Stop is probably the best firewall on the market right now, you just need to REALLY know what you're doing. It's also very light on resources. I used it for a while and I was happy, but since I don't know networking that much, I switched to Outpost, which ALSO has a free version, at http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

As I said, I'm using Outpost's full version, and I'm passing every security test I come across, plus it's easy as all hell to use. They also give you half off if you upgrade from another (paid) firewall, so you can get it for $20 if you got in on those Norton, ZA or McAffee free after rebate deals.

Oh, if anyone wants an almost free firewall/antivirus solution, Officemax.com has a product called Defender-Pro (www.defender-pro.com) for $10. It's actually a rebranded Kaspersky Antivirus 4 and firewall, plus spamcatcher spyware software. The best part is, they let you install it on as many computers as you want, so you can share it with friends. I specifically asked their CSRs, and he said "feel free to make copies and give it to friends & family".

Can anyone recommend a free AV for servers? Particularly Win2003. AVG *WAS* supporting it, but stopped with their new release...

Since when is Bitdefender better than AVG? Everybody uses AVG.

I like AVG for several reason:

1) Will work on MS Server products.
2) Very Stable and unobtrusive compare to Norton's, Mcafee, or Micro-Trend.
3) Updates in v7.0 are now much smaller.
4) And or course, absolutely FREE for home users.

It looks like many products have had a history of failure with their earlier engines, especially under NT.

However, most of them are now passing the VB100 test and are ISCA certififed:

If I'm not mistaken, AVG no longer works for MS Servers. If you try to install it, it will fail and give you a link to their pro-versions...

I have great trouble getting the anti-vir website ( http://www.free-av.com/ ) to load, and I have tried several times over the past week. I'd be extremely reluctant to use an anti-virus program where I could not EASILY get updates. Anyone else have this problem?

Free-av.com is always down. I used to use them more often, but the fact that i can't even download it from their site ever makes me stick to AVG instead. I don't know why they can't keep their website up for more than a day at a time. Weird.

I hate to ask but do you have a link?

My updates seem to be "up-to-date" but that doesn't always mean its correct...

On one of my PC's, it will not let me ENABLE protection for the first choice, "file protection".

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
