Not an advertised special... I walked into to my local Wally World like usual to buy an assortment of 9mm, 38 and 32ACP. The employee behind the counter asked for my pistol permit, I replied "it's home". He stated "without the pistol permit, I can't sell you handgun ammo". "When did this rule go in affect", I asked. "Weeks ago", he replied with a grin. I plead my case and then asked for 9mm ammo, because it can technically be used in a rifle. He either had no clue or didn't buy it; he still said "no". I asked to speak to the manager and the other employee chimed in, "I'm the Dept. Mgr." I laughed, then he asked the Asst. Mgr. who came walking by... she said "no". I wasn't going to let up, I requested to speak with the Store Mgr., minutes go by and he shows up. I go through the whole conversation with him and he states that it is NYS law, "you need a pistol permit to purchase handgun ammo". I was surprised and told him I wasn't aware of that law. He then said if my intentions were sincere he'd allow the sale of the 9mm ammo if I had a rifle at home. He went into the honesty babble... He told me he'd have to research the law and get back to me. I said I'd clear up the law question with a call to my FFL down the street, he began to walk away. I said don't go, he stuck around to find out there is no such law. Then, replied if you are right and there is no law he'd give me a free box of each caliber ammo I intended to purchase. Because in his words, he has been wrong by telling customers it is law when it's not. He said he couldn't rely on my FFL's words alone, he would do the research and call me tomorrow.
Well, I got the call Thursday afternoon; I went and picked up my FREE ammo... I got one box of 9mm and 38spl. There is no law preventing you from purchasing ammo in NYS. Handgun ammo is nonsense because you can get almost any rifle-carbine in the common handgun flavors, including the ones I posted above. The real 'kicker' was when I picked up the ammo tonight, the signs stating you must have a permit to purchase were taken down...🙂 I was told the Store Mgr. was kinda embarassed for not knowing the law, that's why I got it for free... I was happy to see the Store Mgr. follwed through with his free ammo promise and he was man enough to admit he was wrong. He assumed Walmart's policy was NYS law. Strike one for the good guys... BTW, there is a bill #A01166 in the assembly which wants to do just that, restrict ammo purchases to permit holders only. Vote no to any legislator that backs such nonsense...
