I would love some more info about this upgrade to get all the locals, then I could see the laker games which are only broadcast on KCAL (I live in vegas and currently the only way to see those games is on directv's NBA league pass, or at a casino sports book). Can someone pm me some info?

<< DTV is currently using 3 sat's, while Dish uses 4.
Dish uses Dish 500 to get more than one, while DTV uses DTV Plus to get more then one.
Each sat can only handles so many channels.
Once a point is reached, a new sat must be used.
Since Dish transmits many more channels then DTV, the 2 main sats, 110 and 119, are filled up.
Spot beam sucks. Locals are only picked up in that city, (or close to it).
With Dish, and a $45 adaptor, (search other sites, don't ask), you get locals from every city.
This is because they don't use spot beam (yet), and the same data gets sent to "every city".
So with Dish, you can actually pickup close to 600 to 800 local channels.
This allows you to watch a show in any time zone, as well as any local sports team.
With DTV you get maybe a dozen tops, no matter what equipment you are using.
>>

WHat I meant by the new spot beam is that now you don't have to have the plus dish to get all locals. Just the single round dish. You did have to have the oval dish but no longer.

I didn't know we were tlaking illegal sat service. With that in mind, yes spot beam does suck. However, I don't know why anyone would one 100's of locals. With testing you can get your locals as well as NY and LA on DTV. Dish will go to spot beam before long if they want to compete with DTV. THey are just running out of room. I just hope they don't allow the Dish DTV merger. Talk about a monopoly. THese two competing help keep the cost down below digital cable.

Yeah, I'd appreciate a PM to learn more about that $45 adapter....

And can you get the extra DISH without subscribing to locals? Or do you have to be a Locals subscriber?

With that extra dish now you can get the aljazeera TV station that is always in the news because they broadcast all of Bin Laden's videotaped messages.

Hopefully someone more knowledgable that me on all this LNB stuff can answer this. I current get locals (Pittsburgh) and noticed on that list there is 1 local channel on 61.5 that I don't receive. Its a religious channel though that I have absolutely no interest in really getting. I currently have the Dish 500 (default installation) with 1 wire coming into my house connected to a single receiver. I'd love to get a 2nd line coming in so I could hook up a second receiver (I have a second receiver, just nothing to hook it up to). With this new dish installation, would they bring a separate wire into the house, or would this all be done externally so I'd still have only 1 wire coming in? If thats the case, its almost not even worth getting it as I will never in my life watch that 1 extra channel.

If not, can I ask the installer to route a separate wire in for a 2nd receiver, or will they not do that for me since its not really what he's out here to do. I kind of would like 61.5 for potential future HDTV programming (i have an hdtv tv, but not the 6000 receiver).

Anyone have any advice for me?

So would it be worth it to subscribe to local channels for a month just so I can get another dish for free? :)

Can you PM info about th $45 adapter

thanks

<<

<< I know you are talking Dish but DTV just went to a spot beam system where locals are spot beamed over each city. THis is how they now carry all locals using single dish. THey even offer locals for here in Memphis where dish doesn't. THey are both good systems though. Just wanted to add that DirecTV is now offerring tons of locals all with single dish.

To hookup your Dish 500 to the other reciever all you need is either
a) a RG6 cable from the dish to the receiver or
b) a cable and a SW21 switch. (if you have one SW21 switch thats a cue that you will need another).

However you want an SW64, which is the only way you can see the 2 birds on D500 *and* the new 61.5 on three or four receivers.
Buy another reciever, pay for it so that you can get the SW64.
.
There's other ways of doing it as well since you really only need to see the 61.5 for HDTV.

Thanks for the info. The problem is, the dish is on the roof (I don't own a ladder), is run through a hole drilled into the brick, and routed through the house down to my basement. Thats way more work that I feel comfortable doing myself, which is why I haven't gotten around to ever doing it. I'd need a pro install, but I don't want to pay to just have someone come out just to do that. You think they'd do that for me if they have to come out to install the new dish for 61.5?

Nope the SW44 will give you access to the third tv..I would rather get the SW64 out of this though..But the 44 will provide access to the third..THe guy on the pone said it just depends on what he has on the truck. :D I have two receivers now but need at least one more...So either way I am fine..The fourth room would not be used for a while anyway :D

What part of this don't you guys understand? :

<< With Dish, and a $45 adaptor, (search other sites, don't ask), you get locals from every city. >>

Besides that, I gave you a link to get you started.
Sorry, but I can do no more.
This is similiar to doing anything extra, so that you get more than they originally intended.
Kind of like a 1GHz AMD CPU, and modifying the chip so that it then becomes a 1.4GHz.
Except in this case, there is NO modification done to any equipment or cards.

RobsTV,

Which is the link you are referring to?

The Interesting Devices link says I don't have authorization.

Thanks

Thanks

Right,
I understand your "don't ask", but since no one seems to be able to find it(I've spent about 3 hours on interesting devices alone, and even posted unanswered questions there), I thought maybe you could give us a little more of a hint to go on other than just an adaptor is out there.
Thanks...

go read the testing tutorials at sattech.net, however remember that "testing" is not legal in the united states. It is somewhat-legal to test dish in canada, by current canadian law. I strongly advise against doing any "testing" unless you have the knowledge to do some heavy repair on your receiver. Dish will lobotimize your receiver into a lump of coal :)

I'm soooo confused. So lets say I get the extra dish. I get the Sat at 61.5 for some obscure local station. Will I also be able to get the International stations on 61.5? Or do I have to pay additional for them?

Thanks in Advance...

- The International Channels cost extra money (actually quite a bit more).

- The HDTV channels require a model 6000 receiver. You can get the CBS one for something like a couple of dollars a month IF your zip code qualifies. You get the HBO and/or Showtime HD channels free IF you subscribe to the regular HBO and/or Showtime packages.

- The special box someone keeps referring to, is for the purpose of RIPPING OFF Dish Network. Since they don't even break even at the moment, this is certainly the same as shoplifting.

Unless you have the model 6000 receiver, all you will be getting is those extra local channels.

This is a great deal, and fun to follow through to the end! The scripts were a help to make sure to present yourself the best way.

I called two nights ago and got local channels turned on. I had to go through the switch test in setup and do the smart card in-and-out to get everything visible.

Last night I called about the SF Bay channel I couldn't see, and was told I could get the free antenna and installation. We picked a day and AM/PM window, and I'm good to go. No hassle, but you do have to go through the confirmation process, with included attempts to attract you to sign up for more and select alternative billing options.

I hope that the installer will go along with just dropping the stuff off, since I want to install it myself. DN wouldn't give me any way to directly contact the installer before the on-site arrival.

Thanks to DAKn2, richd111, RobsTV, and brianafischer for the info and scripts.

Can I assume that this is NOT going to help those of us in the rural areas who now only qualify for "Distant Broadcast Networks"?

I'm in rural Oregon, don't have a D500, and have the LA Stations package w/UPN on Sat. 119.

Most of the LA stations are on sat. 119, but I do notice that several independents stations are only carried on sat. 148.

Later.....
