Actually, it's not chlorine, it's sodium hypochlorite (last I heard--formula might have changed).

If you only use stabilized chlorine your cyanuric acid levels will continue to increase which causes corrosion and can only be lowered by draining the pool. The best combination is to use stabilized chlorine to get the CA levels at the right level, then just use bleach which doesn't have stabilizer. (Of course your local pool dealer won't tell you this... ) ;)

bleach is a form of chlorine. chlorine comes in many different forms. calciumhypoclorite, lithiumhypochlorite, the list goes on.

you are correct about the cy levels. i use granular calciumhpochlorite which contains no cy but it does raise the calcium levels which is bad if you have a gunite pool. i have an inground vinyl lined foxx pool so calcium levels will not cause deposits and i usaully drain it about half way in the winter since i have a looploc mesh safety cover. only thing i like about the pucks is that they dissolve slower.

bleach is still very weak compared with shock or granular chlorine. it really doesnt amount to any cost savings and you have to deal with all those gallon jugs

Sodium hypochlorite = Na ClO (hypochlorite is chlorine + one oxygen), so it isn't technically free elemental chlorine. Anyway thanks, great deal--longtime reader, first smartass post.
